𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆 There is evidence that the suicide rate among mining and construction workers is increasing, with the suicide rate for the period of 2012–2019 significantly higher than the other worker groups. A study among Australian coal miners found higher levels of psychological distress than among a national sample of employed persons, and higher levels of psychological distress among workers at remote mines have also been observed. At WFR, we are fully aware of the pressures not only in the mining and construction sector but also in the full workforce and the struggles individuals have with mental health and coping with life's stresses. Part of WFR's business Thrive Model is our Enhancing Mental Wellbeing Program. We proudly deliver our bespoke programs to employees in any sector to assist in preventing and reducing the suicide rates among workers in Australia. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthawareness #employeewellbeing

Change the Narrative ⬇ This World Suicide Prevention Day, we acknowledge the unique challenges faced by those in the mining sector. With a suicide rate of 72 per 100,000 men (based on 2021 data in the U.S.), the mining industry continues to experience higher rates than most other sectors. Contributing factors include isolation from family, long hours, job insecurity, and a male-dominated culture that discourages open discussions around mental health. Fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) and drive-in-drive-out (DIDO) work models, common in mining, further contribute to mental health risks, with many workers feeling disconnected from support systems. A study found that 10.7% of surveyed Canadian miners had considered suicide within two weeks of being asked, that’s about four times higher than the rate of the general population. This is a clear reminder of the importance of workplace mental health education and support systems. At Mining International, we believe that addressing mental health in the workplace is critical to ensuring the well-being of mining professionals. We encourage everyone to #StartTheConversation – reach out to colleagues, provide support, and create an environment where asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Let’s break the stigma, provide mental health resources, and work together to protect the people who drive this vital industry. Today, the 10th of September, is World Suicide Prevention Day During the period between 2001-2019, 287 male workers employed in the mining industry died by suicide (source: Mates in Construction). Mental health issues pose a significant challenge in the mining and manufacturing industry, similar to physical injuries, and can be defined as conditions that adversely impact mood, cognition, and behaviour. Employers must understand that maintaining good mental health is vital not only for the well-being of their employees but also for the overall success of the business. Mental health problems can affect individuals both at work and at home, leading to decreased productivity and an increased risk of workplace accidents and injuries. In Australia, several free resources are available to support mental health: Beyond Blue - Call 1300 225 636 Helping all Australians achieve their best possible mental health, with 24/7 qualified support available. Working in Fly-in-Fly-out (FIFO) roles can significantly impact mental health due to isolation, long work hours, and extended periods away from home. It's crucial for both workers and employers to recognise these challenges and take proactive steps to address them. By maintaining open communication with family, recognising signs of mental distress, and building strong support networks, we can help improve the well-being of our FIFO workforce. We must work together to create a supportive environment and foster resilience in the mining industry. Our latest article, "Managing Mental Health in FIFO in the Mining Industry," explores in further depth how to notice the signs, implement preventative measures, and offer support. As we continue to navigate the challenges within the mining sector, one critical issue stands at the forefront: mental health and suicide prevention, particularly among our male workforce. According to research, men in the mining industry are at a higher risk of mental health challenges, often due to the demanding work environment, long hours away from home, and the stigma surrounding vulnerability. It's time to break this silence and take actionable steps towards fostering a supportive culture. 📞 If you or someone you know is in crisis, please reach out for help. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available at 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255). You are not alone 💜 Together, we can create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all construction professionals. Let’s work hand-in-hand to combat this crisis and ensure that every individual knows they are valued, heard, and supported. Let’s make mental health a priority. 💚 #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealthAwareness #MiningIndustry #SupportEachOther #BreakTheSilence

GOLD COAST LIVIN WELL SESSION | MENTAL HEALTH A few weeks ago, our Gold Coast-Water Infrastructure Services team spent the morning with the great humans at LIVIN (shoutout to Jodi Brown to delivering an incredible session!) and our client GCISolutions for a #LIVINWELL session. These engaging sessions are the cornerstone of our corporate partnership with LIVIN. We are beyond proud to be able to start the conversation around mental health, empowering our team with the resources and reminders that #ITAintWeakToSpeak According to the stats, 1 in 5 working in the construction industry (possibly you, or someone you know) will experience a mental health crisis in the next 12 months – and we’re here to make sure our team is equipped if they need it. 🛠 Some key takeaways the team regularly say they learn: • What signs to look for in someone struggling; • How to make time to have the chat and ask if someone is okay; • And taking time for some self-reflection and practice some self-love. These presentations allow for an opportunity to self-reflect, check in with our friends, family and co-workers and remember to take time for ourselves. https://lnkd.in/e6W4ggVt #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #cegroup #mentalheathinconstruction #mateshelpingmates #wellbeingdays #staffwellbeing #pngbusiness #mentalhealthfirst #livin #itaintweaktospeak #electricalcontractor #contractofochoice #energyaustralia #mining #electricalindustrialcontractor #livinorg #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #complexelectrical #electrical #livin #itaintweaktospeak #mentalhealthinconstruction #ruok #livinorg #electricalengineering #industrialengineering #industrialelectrician

In 2015, I lost six close mates to mental health-related issues within just six months. This tragedy highlighted to me the critical importance of mental well-being alongside physical safety in the mining sector. Experiencing how safety extends beyond helmets and protocols; safety fundamentally includes MENTAL FITNESS. Understanding the 'Why' behind safety protocols in an environment as challenging as mining means recognising that each worker's mental state can significantly impact their focus, decision-making, and reaction times. Stress, anxiety, or depression can & will increase the risk of accidents and injuries, therefore making mental fitness not merely an optional add-on, but a vital part of everyday operations. At Evocativ, I train teams in mental fitness as a form of Preventive Maintenance for the mind, which is essential for enhancing resilience and safety. My commitment goes beyond compliance—it’s about creating a culture where every miner is supported to thrive, mentally and physically. Honouring our lost mates by committing to mental fitness as diligently as we do to our physical safety, demonstrates it’s not just about meeting standards but ensuring every miner returns home safe and mentally fit for life. Suicide in the construction Industry is a growing crisis. In the UK, suicide rates in the construction industry are more than 3x higher than the national average. With long hours, high stress, and job insecurity, mental health struggles are becoming increasingly prevalent. Two workers take their own lives every working day. 😢 Male construction workers are particularly vulnerable, with 25% of industry suicides being men aged 45-54. It's time for employers to take mental health seriously, create open environments, and offer support. Together, we can change the narrative. 💬 Check in on your colleagues and have those difficult conversations, it may just save a life! #MentalHealthMatters #ConstructionSafety #SupportYourWorkers #OJSafety #SuicidePrevention
