The construction industry is a pivotal force in the quest to mitigate the housing shortage, a challenge that has become increasingly complex in Canada. As a primary provider of new housing solutions, the industry’s role is crucial in erecting structures and shaping the future of urban and suburban landscapes. However, this task is not without formidable obstacles.
The theme of the upcoming Ontario Association of Architects Conference in Niagara Falls (May 22-24, 2024), “Housing: Pushing the Envelope,” aligns with RForm’s mission and resonates with the critical need for creative solutions in today’s housing landscape. A recent RForm post, The Housing Affordability Debate: An Architect’s View, discusses how Architects can be essential allies in solving the affordability crisis. Is it is a logical progression. The designer should understand the trade, and the trade should understand the intention of the designer.
Eleanor Jolliffe's latest BD column marks the start of the New Year with a look at how the profession is changing in 2024. Drawing on her extensive research into the history of the architectural profession, Eleanor asks whether the growing prominence of architects working for contractors is a sign of a wider shift. This from Eleanor: "For years architects have bemoaned the loss of influence the profession has suffered within the wider construction industry. I have written previously of my belief that this stems from a lack of knowledge and engagement with the process of construction itself, and an over-aggrandisement of the architectural concept. "The wider industry needs a designer who engages with the process of construction; one who is a better inheritor of the historic role of the architect than the increasingly intellectualised version we have been forming over the last few decades. "Perhaps it already exists though. Perhaps the ‘contractor side’ architectural design manager may be where the future of architectural influence lies." Does the rise of the contractor-side architect mark the start of a new era for the profession?

What to Read This #Summer 📚 'High-quality Architecture and Built Environment: a Political Goal'. On the occasion of a workshop organised as part of the 2023 UIA World Congress of Architects CPH 2023, the Architects' Council of Europe (ACE-CAE) and the Region I of the International Union of Architects (UIA - International Union of Architects Region I) released a joint publication entitled 'High-quality Architecture and Built Environment: a Political Goal'. This publication puts the spotlight on recent policy initiatives, at EU and national levels, that support a high-quality architecture and built environment, as well as Baukultur. High-quality #Baukultur is about society’s responsible handling of its built environment and its architecture. It requires and implies an increased participation of society in care for, and development of, the built environment, but also quality-based processes throughout the life-cycle of projects. Baukultur is a holistic approach, which cares for and seeks to achieve a sustainable society, with quality of life and collective well-being for all.
