MORE THAN ONE BILLION. This is how many chickens are reared each year in the UK alone. Most are confined in crowded barren sheds, and bred to grow so big so fast (4x faster than 50 years ago) that they cannot behave like chickens, who naturally like to perch, peck, forage and play. These birds often struggle to walk and spend most of their time sitting doing nothing or become lame. Dr Tracey Jones, Director of Compassion in World Farming - Food Business, recently sat down with Poultry News to talk about the Better Chicken Commitment. Food Businesses who sign up commit to introduce higher welfare standards for ALL chickens in their supply chain, by 2026. #Stop #Eating #Animals On top of all the problems with eating farmed salmon, as stated in this post by Oliver Dauert (and you have the same issues with animal welfare, antibiotics, and pollution obviously on land as well, and a lot worse even), we use 80% of all agriculturally used land to feed and keep livestock (supplying only 17%! of our calory intake), while we use only 16% to grow food we eat ourselves. The remaining 4% we use to grow biofuels. What a waste.

Poor animal health can negatively impact animal wellbeing & productivity, producer livelihoods, food security, human health, and the environment. The Global Burden of Animal Diseases (GBADs) Programme uses systematic methods and models of populations, disease, and economy dynamics to estimate the impacts of disease and other health problems in terrestrial and aquatic livestock species, with the aim of enhancing decision making in animal and public health. To make these approaches more accessible, we have recently published the GBADs Technical Guide (v1.0).
