About us

For over 15 years, Compassion has pioneered a unique programme of corporate engagement, working with food companies at every stage of their journey. Our Food Business Team partners with leading manufacturers, food service businesses and retail chains to develop strategies that raise the baseline standards of farmed animal welfare at a global level. This work aligns with the need to address the global climate, nature and health crises. Our focus is on rebalancing the food system so that significantly fewer animals are farmed, and those that are come from higher welfare systems. We can then progress towards more regenerative, nature-friendly farming, producing safe and nutritious food within our planetary boundaries.

Thank you Compassion in World Farming for awarding Niman Ranch with the Good Sow Commendation! We were honored to receive this recognition at the Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards ceremony held last week in Paris, France among other companies and farmers around the world proving every day that raising higher welfare livestock is not just possible—it can be good for business too. Niman Ranch and White Oak Pastures were the only two U.S. companies to receive this pig welfare commendation, demonstrating its rigorous standards. We dedicate this award to our farmer network who put in the extra care and attention every day to raise their livestock humanely, sustainably and crate-free. #RaisedWithCare https://lnkd.in/gjwzzAJD

  • 🏆 A Special Recognition Award in Sustainable Food & Farming category was presented to Spanish producer Finca Regenerativa Valle del Conde at this year’s Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards. Its olive farm has been dedicated to regenerative agriculture since 2019 when its owners realised that farming could be done differently - by not only respecting the ecosystem but actively protecting, restoring and enhancing it. 🐑 Finca Regenerativa Valle del Conde’s primary focus has been on protecting and enriching the soil, which it views as its most valuable resource. Central to its system are sheep, whose grazing enriches the soil and fosters vibrant, life-filled meadows that support a thriving ecosystem with increased biodiversity. In just five years, Finca Regenerativa Valle del Conde has transformed monoculture olive fields into multi-species grasslands, rich with wildlife – from birds such as owls and vultures to a wide variety of insects. This has resulted in a flourishing ecosystem and high-quality olive oil with an exceptional nutritional profile. Global Chief Executive at Compassion in World Farming

WL op-ed: Philip Lymbery, Compassion in World Farming There is a crisis facing humanity. And we have a simple choice: extinction or regeneration. The choice before us remains extinction or regeneration. There is still time to act. But we are beyond the eleventh hour. We have just seven harvests left to save the Sustainable Development Goals. We have just sixty harvests left in our soils to save the future for our children. For people, animals, and the planet, the clock is ticking. There is no time to lose. What we do now will define the next one thousand years. We have to move to regenerative farming, embrace beautiful, life-affirming, compassionate solutions; regenerative solutions that bring back wildlife, that restore soil health, that help to combat climate change and that benefits humanity everywhere, the animals who live wild alongside us, the animals we farm and the earth itself, its soils, its waters and its abundant biodiversity. With very grateful thanks to Riverford Organic Farmers @WickedLeeks for so kindly publishing my Op-ed 🙏 #farming #future #futureoffarming #animals #soils #sustainability #rewilding #reprotein #regeneration #environment #nature Compassion in World Farming Compassion in World Farming - Food Business https://lnkd.in/evS-wjxM

  • Yesterday, a Special Recognition Award in the Innovation category was presented to Marks and Spencer at this year’s Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards. 🏆 🦐 In partnership with its shrimp producers, and supported by FAI Farms, M&S has developed a comprehensive protocol to monitor the health and welfare of shrimp throughout its supply chain. This initiative not only aims to enhance shrimp welfare but also supports scientific research to address knowledge gaps and drive progress. By successfully establishing a shrimp supply chain free from mutilations, M&S is directly improving welfare standards, and by providing farmers with training and tools, it is advancing all aspects of shrimp welfare across their entire life cycle. M&S exclusively sources from producers who do not practice eyestalk ablation, making this a core requirement into its Select Farm standards. M&S has also defined new outcome measures and initiated electric stunning trials, rolling out new stunners. As a result, approximately 300 million shrimp annually will benefit from these advancements. • At our Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards ceremony yesterday, all five Good Chicken Award recipients hailed from the USA - LaBelle Patrimoine, Applegate, Campfire Treats, Evermore Pet Food and Wild Nosh Pets. 🏆 👏 LaBelle Patrimoine is dedicated to animal welfare and sustainable farming, raising healthier, slower-growing breeds with outdoor access to enriched environments. The latest US producer to sign the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC), LaBelle Patrimoine aims to fulfil this commitment by 2027. As one of the few USDA Approved Regeneratively Raised producers, it also focuses on improving soil health and carbon sequestration. 👏 Applegate, a leading US producer of natural and organic meat products, was one of the first to commit to higher welfare broiler chicken standards. A 2017 BCC signatory, it is 100% compliant with on-farm standards for lighting, litter, enrichments and stocking density. Applegate has transitioned 50% of its supply to more humane slaughter methods and 10% to higher welfare breeds, aiming for full compliance by 2028. 👏 The other three Good Chicken Award winners were pet food manufacturers. Campfire Treats is the first US company to become fully compliant with the US BCC, setting an example for more than just pet food companies and meeting all the requirements of the BCC within just two years! 👏 Evermore Pet Food was the second company to be fully compliant with the BCC in the US after committing in 2022. The company sourced products that met 100% compliance with standards for lighting, litter, enrichments, stocking density and humane slaughter. Evermore Pet Food fully implemented its commitment as policy in less than two years by switching its supply to a higher welfare breed. 👏 Finally, Wild Nosh Pets is the latest addition to the growing list of 100% BCC-compliant manufacturers in the USA. After signing up in 2023, the company moved swiftly to transition its entire supply by 2024. Wild Nosh believes in educating its customers so that they can make more thoughtful decisions when it comes to purchasing chicken for their pets and in other areas of their day-to-day lives.
