Our tagline of “Fresh, Local Food For All” is more than just words: it’s the philosophy we embrace every day. We firmly believe that everyone who lives in North Carolina should have access to the healthy, nutritious, beautiful food that’s grown here. This year, we will contribute 850,000 pounds of local food to the emergency food system – that’s the equivalent of 700,000 meals! Just this week, we were able to deliver 28,640 pounds of nutrient-rich local produce to partner organizations across the Triangle, thanks to the support of our community! In partnership with multiple direct-service agencies, 716 boxes of North Carolina-grown produce and proteins are on their way to our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. In the case of food on the Food Traceability List (FTL) sold to a nonprofit food establishment, only the nonprofit food establishment is exempt from the rule under § 1.1305(o); none of the other entities in the supply chain are exempt. Over 42 years, our non-profit organization has provided programs distributing supplement food and nutritional information/education to food insecure residents of Washington County. The USDA and Feeding America estimate that there are about 18,800 food-insecure people in Washington County, PA. While there are many great food support programs, it is also estimated that roughly 38% of the food insecure population may not be eligible for traditional, government-funded food programs. It’s hard enough to ask for help, but to then be turned away is unthinkable. Food insecurity — the lack of access to sufficient food, particularly nutritious food, due to limited financial resources — has devastating consequences for health, social, economic, and educational outcomes. FEI works to increase access to nourishing food. Our Food Is Medicine Home program provides clients with produce and shelf-stable foods each month.
