We have 2,000 days to pivot and rise to the climate challenge. The #decarbonisation of buildings will improve communities and that’s why we convened in London with our global network — to align and build momentum. More than 50 Green Building Councils took part, with partners, colleagues, leaders, speakers and friends all united in a journey of transformation for our #builtenvironment. This time allowed us to get inspired to mobilise governments, the finance community and changemakers. Our network alone covers 60% of the world's building stock and 65% of global GDP, while the countries represented account for 72% of built environment emissions. Our CEO, Cristina Gamboa, highlights the time for urgency in her recent blog: https://bit.ly/4eS0nra When we all push in the same direction, we can be an unstoppable force for change. We’re #BuildingTheTransition. Are you ready? #LCAW24

The real estate sector represents nearly 40% of global emissions. Decarbonizing our built environment is critical to reaching our climate goals. I am proud to have supported the publication of this practical guide to real estate transition planning and green governance from CRREM - Carbon Risk Real Estate Monitor and EPRA (European Public Real Estate Association)! Here are some of the key elements covered in the report: -Decarbonization and target-setting are continuing despite the economic environment -Regulation and market demand is accelerating the creation of low-carbon and decarbonized real assets -However, for many organizations a gap exists between their commitments and aspirations and their implemented actions -This creates a risk of greenwashing that firms need to monitor and address -Effective transition planning is both a responsibility and an imperative for real estate leaders -Credible plans will have detailed targets, tangible actions, and clear CapEx planning -Despite challenges, a number of good practices have been identified for real estate decarbonization https://lnkd.in/eVwf-ytT #climate #realestate #netzero #emissions #climaterisk #transition #transitionplanning #sustainablefinance #decarbonization #buildings

Our CEO, Cristina Gamboa, asked an important question in her opening speech at our Global Solutions Forum. “In just over 2,000 days, we will enter a new decade. What kind of morning do you want to wake up to on 1 January 2030?” Cristina Gamboa and the WorldGBC team are hopeful for our future because we see the action and determination from our global network. Our hope is justified. Our global network of Green Building Councils (GBCs) covers 60% of the world’s building stock and 65% of global GDP. The countries represented by our network account for 72% of #builtenvironment emissions and 62% of the world’s population. Our voice is unified. It’s time to shift mindsets, innovate and recalibrate to ensure we build momentum for a better future. We’re building momentum by targeting nothing less than the total decarbonisation of our sector. We’re building momentum to ensure that the built environment contributes to natural resource regeneration and a thriving circular economy. The built environment is not only a solution to #climatechange, but it can truly nurture people, economies and the planet. We’re building momentum. The conversation surrounding environmental accountability in commercial real estate gets louder by the day. With groundbreaking proposals from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the U.S. Treasury Department, mandating public companies to divulge their greenhouse gas emissions and climate risk data, the corporate realm faces intensified scrutiny. Because, according to the Rocky Mountain Institute, commercial buildings are responsible for nearly 40 percent of global carbon emissions annually, so they are coming under the gun now the country turns towards ESG. #CRE #Office #GreenBuildings #CarbonNeutrality #AdaptiveReuse #TenantTips #CorporateRealEstate https://hubs.li/Q02mrN6B0

WorldGBC’s leading role in the Buildings Breakthrough Priority Action 1 was announced last month by Simon Sharpe, Director of Economics, United Nations Climate Champions Team, High-Level Climate Champions. Speaking at our Global Solutions Forum as part of London Climate Action Week, Simon highlighted how the Buildings Breakthrough will help international flows of finance to find their way to the most zero emission and resilient buildings across the world. With our global network of Green Building Councils, WorldGBC will work alongside Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) (hosted by UN Environment Programme) to convene an international working group ‘consisting of national Green Building Councils, key international organisations and countries to develop and build consensus in defining the common principles required for delivery of ‘near zero emission and resilient buildings’. WorldGBC is delighted to be examining the role of standards, data, skills and the value chain in a panel hosted by RICS. Our CEO Cristina Gamboa joins representatives from across the built environment value chain to discuss the solutions and gaps to decarbonising the built environment, and delivering the aspirations of the #BuildingsBreakthrough. “There has to be a moment when the growth of the buildings industry does not create extra carbon emissions. Policy-makers and investors are increasingly pledging to “net zero". However, we see a mismatch of metrics and standards used differently by different groups of actors. This confusion risks sending investors in the wrong direction, locking in future emissions from poor choices or lack of action.” Cristina Gamboa, CEO, World Green Building Council Data and alignment will continue to be a key theme as the conversations continue this week towards the Buildings and Climate Global Forum. #BuildingTheTransition #BuildForClimate Ministère Écologie Territoires

Sometimes (*ducks in anticipation of things being thrown ...*) the UK planning system can support the built environment. Heritage buildings. ESG pressures. Tricky, but workable. Here are our thoughts. #HLplanning
