The real estate sector represents nearly 40% of global emissions. Decarbonizing our built environment is critical to reaching our climate goals. I am proud to have supported the publication of this practical guide to real estate transition planning and green governance from CRREM - Carbon Risk Real Estate Monitor and EPRA (European Public Real Estate Association)! Our CEO, Cristina Gamboa, asked an important question in her opening speech at our Global Solutions Forum. “In just over 2,000 days, we will enter a new decade. The conversation surrounding environmental accountability in commercial real estate gets louder by the day. With groundbreaking proposals from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the U.S. Treasury Department, mandating public companies to divulge their greenhouse gas emissions and climate risk data, the corporate realm faces intensified scrutiny. WorldGBC’s leading role in the Buildings Breakthrough Priority Action 1 was announced last month by Simon Sharpe, Director of Economics, United Nations Climate Champions Team, High-Level Climate Champions. Speaking at our Global Solutions Forum as part of London Climate Action Week, Simon highlighted how the Buildings Breakthrough will help international flows of finance to find their way to the most zero emission and resilient buildings across the world. With our global network of Green Building Councils, WorldGBC will work alongside Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) (hosted by UN Environment Programme) to convene an international working group ‘consisting of national Green Building Councils, key international organisations and countries to develop and build consensus in defining the common principles required for delivery of ‘near zero emission and resilient buildings’. Our CEO Cristina Gamboa joins representatives from across the built environment value chain to discuss the solutions and gaps to decarbonising the built environment, and delivering the aspirations of the #BuildingsBreakthrough. “There has to be a moment when the growth of the buildings industry does not create extra carbon emissions. Policy-makers and investors are increasingly pledging to “net zero". However, we see a mismatch of metrics and standards used differently by different groups of actors.
