🌍 By 2050 Africa will be home to 1.1 billion more people than it is today. That’s nearly 75% of the world’s projected population growth of 1.5 billion more people. This means a huge demand for buildings, with 80% of those that will exist in 2050 yet to be built. We must act now. Our network of African Green Building Councils (GBCs) developed the Africa Manifesto for Sustainable Cities and the Built Environment. The Manifesto champions the needs of rapidly growing cities on the continent. I look forward to meaningful and impactful conversations. ‘The Africa We Want’ encompasses Africans narrating their own stories. Our ancestors prioritized sustainability and community dependence. The terms #resilient, #sustainable, #collaboration, and #cocreation reflect the historical essence of Africa. Although there have been deviations, we are now realigning with our roots, infused with technology and innovation. Thank you to the Green Building Council Nigeria for your diligent efforts to ensure the summit’s success. Here are a few key outcomes I hope the summit will achieve, all manageable: 1. Young professionals to lead green building initiatives, not just as advocates but as implementors. 2. Enhanced cooperation between the private sector and governments to help achieve local, regional, and global objectives. 3. A focus on capacity building, training, and mentorship that provides practical skills. 4. Integration of students into real-world environments, both in the office and on-site. The panel, entitled "𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼̂𝘁𝗲 𝗱’𝗜𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗿𝗲", discussed the development challenges facing Côte d'Ivoire's major cities, such as Abidjan and Yamoussoukro. Experts stressed the need for sustainable urban models to manage population growth and rapid urbanization. They emphasized the importance of basic infrastructure and urban resilience. The Barcelona model was examined for its successes in urban mobility and public space management. Speakers called for greater collaboration between local governments, private players, and communities to find innovative solutions adapted to local realities. In commemorating World Sustainable Transport Day on November 26th, 2023, The Sahara Centre is launching an Open Call for Ideas to make Nigeria’s streets safer. Have you ever had personal experiences traveling in cities where walking, taking public transport, driving or even crossing the road felt unsafe? We get it too. Sustainable transportation is not just a puzzle of tech and policy— it's also about breaking down social barriers. These challenges require collective societal action and public engagement to ensure the safety of our streets. Our unique backgrounds and interests can offer creative and innovative solutions to tackling the issue of safe streets in cities and communities across Nigeria. The Sahara Centre has a vision for sustainable social development across Nigeria. We recognize the impact of poor road safety and lack of access to safe and affordable mobility. Still, we aim to harness the opportunities and identify innovative solutions to address these challenges.
