Building a Diverse and Inclusive Leadership Team through Management Control At our organization, we recognize that true transformation extends beyond numerical targets; it requires a fundamental shift in mindset and a commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive leadership team. Through the Management Control pillar of B-BBEE, we actively promote the representation of black individuals at various management levels, ensuring that diverse perspectives and experiences are reflected in our decision-making processes. By embracing diversity in our leadership ranks, we tap into a wealth of talent, drive innovation, and cultivate an organizational culture that values different viewpoints. This approach not only aligns with our B-BBEE goals but also enhances our competitiveness and ability to better serve our diverse customer base. We believe that true transformation starts at the top, and we are committed to nurturing and empowering leaders from historically disadvantaged groups through targeted development programs, such as our GRAP (Graduate Recruitment and Advancement Program) Training. Together, we can create a more representative and inclusive business landscape that unlocks the full potential of South Africa's human capital. Small businesses are the heartbeat of our communities, yet many—particularly in underserved areas—need greater support to thrive. As I recently wrote for The Chronicle of Philanthropy, I explore why #philanthropy must prioritize helping small businesses succeed. I share the story of my uncle and godfather, Marino Delgado, who built a restaurant that became a pillar of our community in Providence, RI. Though my uncle is no longer with us, my cousin, continues to run the business, honoring his dad’s legacy. Their story is one of dreams realized and the powerful opportunity small businesses provide to transform lives and families across the country. Key players in the small business support ecosystem—including CDFIs, community-based organizations, and initiatives like Mastercard Strive are delivering critical resources to underserved #entrepreneurs. By investing in these efforts, foundations and social impact investors can help drive innovation, create jobs, and build long-term resilience in local economies. #financialinclusion #inclusivegrowth #smallbusiness Community Reinvestment Fund, USA Next Street Accion Opportunity Fund Milken Institute Finance Hyphen Rebecca van Bergen Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth Nest
Opinion: To create an equitable economy, grant makers should address the financial and training hurdles that cause so many entrepreneurs to fail, writes Sandy Fernandez. https://bit.ly/4eUmfBH Fernandez is vice president of North America at the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth and part of the Mastercard Strive USA program leadership team.

I am at day 2 of the Governance Institute of Australia International Leadership Conference and what an interesting morning discussing cognitive ability from a neuroscientist's perspective, geopolitics and global risk. It can be difficult to remain optimistic in the world we live in today with the current geopolitical climate while there are many facets to having a global outreach. Through good governance we aim at the Global Empowering Women Organisation to work with all developing and developed nations in need. Understanding the needs is one thing while understanding the geopolitical and global risk associated is another and one day possibly with the work of men and women international relations will have a breakthrough generating global peace and stability.

Gaining Insight from Sir Emyr Jones Parry on "Our Common Challenges" On October 15th, 2024, I had the privilege of attending an enlightening online session led by Sir Emyr Jones Parry. As an advisor to a succession of British Prime Ministers on international affairs and the UK representative at the United Nations Security Council, Sir Emyr's vast experience provided a unique perspective on today’s geopolitical landscape. At a time when geopolitics weighs heavily on the minds of businesses, governments, and citizens, Sir Emyr spoke about the macro factors driving global change. His discussion centered on "Our Common Challenges," highlighting how the UN Sustainable Development Goals were created to be a “shared vision of humanity and a social contract between the world's leaders and the people.” It was an eye-opening session, reminding me of the critical importance of collaboration and shared responsibility in addressing global issues. I left the session with a renewed understanding of the role we all play in advancing sustainable development and creating a better future. I look forward to applying these insights and continuing to learn from thought leaders like Sir Emyr. #UNSDGs #GlobalChallenges #Sustainability #Leadership #Geopolitics #ProfessionalGrowth #USW
