The youth of today play an integral role in creating a better urban future. The United Nations has selected this topic as the 2024 World Habitat Day theme, emphasizing the global significance of teaching the next generation about urban planning and shaping sustainable cities and communities. Through environmental education, young people learn to care for their local environment, whether on a beach, among the wilderness, or within a heavily developed city. Case Study: Honoring Indigenous Sovereignty and Land Stewardship with Itsu Circle We are honored to share our recent work with Itsu Circle, an organization committed to supporting the sovereignty of federally unrecognized Indigenous Nations in California. Our partnership with Itsu Circle went beyond just creating a website—it was about building a bridge between traditional ecological knowledge and modern conservation science. Through a deep understanding of their mission and audience, we developed a brand strategy, website, and social media presence that honored Indigenous perspectives, making the digital space accessible for everyone—including older tribal members unfamiliar with the internet. Every color, every visual element had intention, rooted in the landscapes and cultural heritage Itsu Circle works to protect. This work was more than a project; it was a chance to support something truly meaningful—Indigenous-led efforts to reclaim land and heal communities. We invite you to read more about this powerful collaboration in our case study. Read the full case study by clicking below: https://lnkd.in/ggxjcHDv

🌳 Great parks should NOT uproot communities! 🌍 We all love green spaces—they improve our health, boost climate resilience, and strengthen communities. But what happens when these same parks and greenways inadvertently push out long-standing residents? Green gentrification is a growing challenge: parks meant to benefit underserved communities can lead to rising rents, new affluent residents, and the displacement of those who should benefit most. But here’s the good news: It doesn’t have to be this way! Our latest research identifies key risk factors for green gentrification and proposes strategies to prevent displacement: 1️⃣ Design parks with community input. 2️⃣ Prioritize affordable housing near green spaces. 3️⃣ Empower local businesses and residents. Creating parks and green spaces without displacing communities is possible! 🏞️ Let’s work together to ensure everyone benefits from a greener future. 💚 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gfQAg6ds

As we work to build systems that truly serve, we must start by inviting the voices of those directly impacted. Their stories, experiences, and insights are the can be the compass to guide meaningful change. Take the Restoration Trust in California, for example. This program brings communities, particularly Indigenous groups, into the heart of land restoration projects. By honoring traditional ecological knowledge and creating partnerships, they’re transforming conservation efforts into collaborative successes that uplift both the environment and the people it supports. Imagine a healthcare system that works the same way-where collaboration replaces assumptions, and community voices drive decisions. By including those who are most impacted, we’re not just building better systems, we’re fostering trust, equity, and solutions that truly uplift everyone. Let’s design together by listening first. How are you incorporating community voices into your work? Let’s learn from each other!
