With the recent political events in the EU, FoodDrinkEurope is providing policymakers with a sustainability roadmap. Their guide outlines strategies to empower the European food and drink industry, aiming for global leadership in sustainability, innovation, and economic performance while ensuring food safety, affordability, and security. Food Investment and Resilience Plan Takes Centre Stage FoodDrinkEurope presented their updated Food Investment and Resilience Plan at their #FoodFuture Ideas Fest in Brussels. Over 800 stakeholders attended and discussed the future of food. Dirk Jacobs, Director General of FoodDrinkEurope, stated: “The food and drink sector is vital to the EU’s ambitions, driving growth, sustainability, and food security. With the right support, we have the ability to significantly enhance Europe’s competitiveness, provide societal stability, and invest in resilient food systems. Close engagement with our sector will therefore be critical for policymakers in the coming term.” Mr Jacobs underlined the industry’s scale and impact: “Our sector consists of nearly 300,000 businesses, with nine out of ten employing fewer than 20 people. Yet they contribute €110 billion in wages annually, purchase 70% of all EU farm produce, and invest over €2 billion in innovative, sustainably-produced products.” 🔗 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dFftK66M 👉 Visit www.knowesg.com for more sustainability news, courses, events and ratings 👉 Follow us to stay up to day with everything ESG 💚 #esgnews #sustainabilitynews #knowesg

Prosostenible is talking about Buy Better Food in its latest issue: https://shorturl.at/ZstUs ☀ According to a recent study from Carbon4 #publicfoodprocurement, the process by which government departments and local administrations purchase food for public canteens, emerged as the the sector with the highest potential for mitigating #climatechange, when compared with the other sectors analysed. 👩🌾 Investing on #publicprocurement is essential not only for its climate benefits but also to positively influence a whole range of other areas, from farmers’ and workers rights as well as consumers’ health and dietary quality to animal welfare. This happens when cities set appropriate criteria in their public buying processes that require complete transparency throughout the entire supply chain and include specifications regarding the quality of the products. 🎯 This is the core mission of Buy Better Food: advocating to put in the spotlight the potential of public procurement in fostering #healthier, more #equitable, and #sustainable food systems! 👉 To do that BBF is asking local governments all around Europe to endorse the Manifesto on Sustainable Public Food Procurement: https://shorturl.at/F67Og 📍 Several European cities already demonstrated the feasibility and benefits of sustainable public food procurement: https://shorturl.at/9tmJF Fondazione Ecosistemi, Eating City, Organic Cities Network Europe, IFOAM Organics Europe, Skutečně zdravá škola, Mensa Cívica, European Public Health Alliance (EPHA), ICLEI Europe #sustainablefoodsystems #sustainablefood #healthyfood #foodsystems #localfood

Food saved is as important as food produced. The production of food which is lost in the supply chain or wasted at thew retailer or at home account for 250 km3 of the world’s freshwater annually – three times the volume of Lake Geneva. Of this broadly half is between farm and market and accounts for the bulk of food lost in the global south. Yet more than 90% of the of development investment goes into food production, not improving the supply chain. Addressing food loss has multiple quick wins we are missing. https://lnkd.in/dPvHy98n

Today is World Sustainable Procurement Day! 🌎 There's a vital need for mandatory trading criteria for the food offered in European public canteens. We believe that public food procurement provides an amazing opportunity for tackling many sustainability policy goals on one plate 👏 👉 Public canteens, and in particular school meals, are low-hanging fruit for the implementation of the #EU #FarmtoFork strategy. They can be catalysts for food system transformation if their public spending actions include ambitious requirements that go beyond environmental or ‘green’ requests. 📢 Join us in advocating for at least 25% of non-European products to be fairly traded 🍎 Check out our #FarmtoFork Procurement Manifesto for more info: https://lnkd.in/eSyyByFq EU Food Policy Coalition ICLEI IFOAM - Organics International IFOAM Organics Europe Compassion in World Farming Compassion in World Farming EU Eurogroup for Animals European Environmental Bureau #FairTrade #SchoolFood4Change #WorldProcurementDay #F2F

"Major food companies in Australia are roundly failing to set adequate targets to reduce their impact on nature and most are not assessing how their supply chains are hitting the environment, according to a first-of-its-kind report" If you are a business and you aren't taking action for nature, now is the time to start. We are already seeing market drivers, customer demands, consumer pressures, investor preferences, and loss of social license around the business and nature relationship. The loss of nature is happening at an unprecedented rate in human history. This is not just an environmental issue, it's an economic issue, a business financial issue, and the decisions we make now will impact generations to come. The food system is woven into our society's social, economic, environmental, and cultural aspects. However, unsustainable practices within the food value chains negatively impact people and the planet. The Food System Economics Commission recently published a report, The Economics of the Food System Transformation, which explores the challenges and opportunities for a sustainable global food system transformation. 🌱The recently launched #plantourfuture campaign from the European Alliance for Plant-based Foods urges the EU to prioritise rebalancing and diversifying Europe’s food system in the newly embarked upon legislative cycle. The manifesto highlights 6 key focus areas to help deliver this: 🔬Increased funding for research and development to scale-up production and boost European competitiveness, and support the proliferation of a diverse range of plant-based products that can compete with conventional offerings on taste and price. 🏷️Develop clear labelling standards with transparent product information to help consumers make sustainable choices. 🚜Work with farmers and support them in navigating the transition to a more sustainable food system. 🏫Encourage expanded public procurement of plant-based foods. 🎓Educate consumers on the sustainability of the food system. 🏛️Clarify the political direction and policy framework through a sustainable food systems law. Check out the full manifesto on the EAPF website here:https://lnkd.in/dg8S77eT #EU #Europe #foodsystem
