Last year I was asked how a campaign I'd worked on used an innovative approach to marketing. “Erm, it didn’t”. I was chatting about the amazing LEJoG Sisters campaign, but innovation was never part of the conversation when devising the campaign. We simply didn’t have the time or budget – 6 months & less that £500 – to risk trying something new and unproven. What we did do was follow good practices. This meant we could: 📖 Tell a clear and consistent story One that was powerful and concise but that we could slightly shift the focus of to work better for different audiences, formats & channels. 🧑🤝🧑 Understand our core audiences We couldn’t chase everyone or be everywhere. So, it was important to know who we needed to reach and where we could reach them. 🛜 Use others’ networks to share our story Building relationships with the right people meant they would tell our story for us. 📰 Create opportunities to share our story Tell ‘em, tell ‘em and tell ‘em again, as the old saying goes. It’s not that people don’t care, but they’re getting on with their own lives. If you want to be allowed into that, you’ve got to keep showing up. It’s easy to be seduced by the idea that innovation equals shiny, new & effective and that following good practices is staid, boring & what everyone else is doing. When they zig, zag and all that. But good practice isn’t the enemy of creativity. It simply provides the foundations for your creative campaign as well as a tried & test way to be effective. That’s why with no money and very little time, our LEJoG Sisters campaign reached 100,000s of people with its message about childhood cancer and helped to smash its fundraising target for Children with Cancer UK along the way. #charity #fundraising #comms #childhoodCancer

Does your passion show, when you show up? Choosing to expand my network leads to great opportunities to hear from local ‘celebrities’, some of whom like NBN Television Newsreader Natasha Beyersdorf, is a wonderful contributor to our community! Natasha is invited to many events and we were fortunate to have her attend this month's Newcastle Business Club lunch as our special guest. She shared her passion for her job and her community involvement, and how important the role of local media is in sharing local stories. Add to this her commitment to local charitable organisations (even competing in the 'Dancing with the Stars' fundraiser for the Cancer Council!) and it's no surprise that she is admired by many. As a new member of the community, I shared with her how useful the local news has been for us to understand how Newcastle ticks. (...and she's much taller in real life than on the telly! 😁) It was also fabulous to catch up with like-minded business people, including Clare Edwards (FIML), Elizabeth Behne-Smith, Liz Murray, Josh Lawlor from Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation, Catherine Raftos from Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), Simon Borham from Eastview Advisory, and many more. How do you show up, when you're in a business networking setting? Do you have conversations about business, or do you explore the passions of your fellow attendees? Best possible results are driven from a point of passion! If you'd like to explore how that could benefit your business, let's talk! #optimism #bestpossible #passion

It's hard to believe we're officially just two months away until the 128th Boston Marathon, when I'll fulfill a life-long dream of running the historic course in support of Boston Children's Hospital. While I have many training miles ahead, I have even bigger goal in mind to raise $8,500 for a cause near-and-dear to my heart. "Fun" fact about me: Boston Children's was kind of like a second home for a good chunk of my childhood life when I was really sick with Crohn's disease / ulcerative colitis, so I know first-hand the difference they make. And to make a really long story short: since a life-changing surgery at Boston Children's when I was 9, I have been lucky enough to live a healthy, carefree life free of IBD symptoms. While there is still no cure for IBD, because surgery itself is not a cure, I remain grateful to be in remission to this day and reflect fondly on how the BCH team did everything they could to make a difficult time easier on me as a kid. Having in-hospital access to a Nintendo 64 definitely helped. 🎮 Every dollar raised will help fund the best medical care, research, and vital support services for sick children and their families. My ask: If you can help support our Miles for Miracles team to help me reach my fundraising goal of $8,500 -- it would go a long way! #Fundraising | #ScientificResearch | #PatientSupport

Chief Marketing Officer. PR maven. Social media zealot. Published author. Logophile. Organizational development leader. Compliance nerd. Change agent. Fractional C-Suite player. AI policy wonk.
Want to help cure cancer? Want to see more breakthroughs in bioscience that will help us live a healthier life? Then give to this. Often, donors give to large organizations with big names; but what I think is better is to give to funds that help the entrepreneurs working tirelessly without a big marketing budget to make the world a better place. Oh, and I can't let Joan Koerber-Walker beat me. So, skip your Starbucks tomorrow and donate here. And for those of you with the big bucks: you can skip one pair of red bottoms for a good cause. 😉 https://lnkd.in/gk_EPwYZ
