I had the pleasure of speaking at the Asian Golf Industry Federation | AGIF Conference this week in Kuala Lumpur about a topic that I am very passionate about: the generational impact on the game of golf and in our workplaces. Day 1 of the summit, "Who's Going to Lead Next?" organized by Dr. Keyinde Nwani, was truly transformational. During the event, speakers such as Mrs. Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli (co-founder of LEAP Africa) and Mrs. Yemisi Edun (MD, First City Monument Bank) shared profound insights. Here are the key takeaways: 1. Do Singaporeans have what it takes to be global business leaders today? I had the privilege of attending the Singapore Leaders Network (SGLN) Global Leaders Network's 2nd anniversary celebration, jointly organised by the Human Capital Leadership Institute (HCLI) and Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), where the question was put to a very interesting, lively, often humorous, and most definitely insightful debate. Thank you Piyush Gupta, Geraldine Chin, Joel Shen & Michelle Khoo for an excellent sparring session, filled with food for thought, and to the delight of the wonderful audience, devoid of arguments over golf handicaps which are all the rage at the moment during such events. Key takeaways: ⭐ The ingredients are in place. - Singapore and past leaders have built up the necessary systems and government support structures to propel Singaporeans to global leadership. - For a country of our size and resources, Singaporeans are starting to punch above our weight on the global stage. - So what is stopping more Singaporeans from baking a Michelin-grade cake with the ingredients we already have? ⭐ Singaporeans tend to be overly critical and modest. - We are consistently ranked among the top in many global benchmarks, in education, creativity, even global competitiveness and workforce skills. - And yet we tend to downplay our own achievements. "I am not as good as they say." This often makes us less likely to fight hard for leadership roles. ⭐ Marketing ourselves effectively is a challenge. - We prefer to let our achievements speak for themselves, possibly as an unintentional by-product of meritocracy, where we expect our good work to be recognized by those that matter without needing to say anything more about it. ⭐ Shape our own narrative. - We need to celebrate our achievements and shout about them to everyone that matters. ⭐ Kindness and collaboration. - We need to be kinder to each other and help our fellow Singaporeans achieve common success together. - Mentor, guide, and coach our next generation of leaders.
