What is Mentoring? Establishing what “mentoring” actually means is not as easy as it first appears, in fact according to researchers, there are more than 50 definitions (Crisp & Cruz, 2009*). The Oxford English Dictionary states that the first written evidence of the noun “mentoring” was recorded in Pennsylvania, USA in 1926, however the origin of the idea of mentoring can be traced back thousands of years to Ancient Greece. The word “mentor” derives from the character of the same name in Homer’s “Odyssey” - when Odysseus, King of Ithaca, left to fight in the Trojan War, he asked his trusted friend Mentor to advise and teach his son, Telemachus. Over time, the term “mentor” came to refer to someone who was a guide and educator. Mentoring is a founding principal of Women in Racing. Our team of Mentors volunteer their time to provide tailored support, encouragement, guidance and contacts to help ensure that women across the racing industry can develop to their full potential, whatever their role. I attribute my professional success to mentorship, the hard work, determination and potential were all me but I had never realized all of the strong, resilient and kind women that gave me tips here and there were also my mentors. Mentoring is such a fluid idea, someone who cares enough about you to give you support and resources, it can be a set time frame or just listening to a problem and helping connecting you with someone who can help. Women typically feel like we need to do this alone or people will think we are weak, but I feel the most indestructible when I walk into an event/presentation/group/meeting 5 strong women deep! They are my crew, my squad. Having those women allow me to stand on their shoulders is what mentoring is all about. I do not take mentoring lightly, which is why I was floored when I was asked to become a mentor to a room of remarkable women ( and men, we see your support!) in business. Join me and hear about success, failures, smiles and hugs from these other inspiration women!
