As Child Protection Week starts, I would like to acknowledge all those professionals working to support vulnerable children and their families. Child and family work is complex and the workforce needs to be supported within that context. The TISS model provides a framework for practitioners and supervisors that recognises the uniqueness of the practice field, the diversity of practitioners who undertake the work and the diversity of contexts in which they work. If you are working in child protection, OOHC, housing & homelessness, legal & advocacy, youth or justice services and are looking for a trauma-informed practitioner-centred supervision framework for yourself or your staff, here is the link to my book that outlines the TISS model: https://lnkd.in/giDVg4g3

Shining a light on Family Dismantling: What is the most effective way to undermine relative placement preferences in State and Federal regulations? Pretend children don't have fathers or families and don't return phone calls or emails related to relatives or from family finders employed or contracted by the agency. The remedy? Remove authority from line staff to ignore or thwart meaningful preferences. A KinFirst implementation starts with this. Denying placement preferences to relatives is an executive-level decision that should be reported to the public and Legislature at least annually.

It’s National Child Protection Week and this year’s theme is ‘Every conversation matters.’ Conversations matter because they can help us to support the needs of children and young people and address the issues within the systems that are meant to help them. However, these conversations must include the voices of children and young people themselves. Our recent report on improving the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable children found that limited opportunities for child voice and participation was one of six systemic issues plaguing Australia’s child protection and youth justice systems. Find out more about what we learned and the recommendations for reform here: https://lnkd.in/gpT4xmVr #NCPW2024 #ChildProtection #ChildSafety #YouthJustice #NationalChildProtectionWeek

We know how important it is for children, young people and families to have access to whole-of-family early intervention and prevention services. That’s why we’re working across Victoria to strengthen families, support healthy relationships, promote mental health and wellbeing, and prevent family violence. Our focus is on supporting clients with challenges they’re facing now, but also helping them to build skills and knowledge that will support them in the future. Similarly, a new Australian Human Rights Commission report calls for prevention and early intervention to stop our most vulnerable children from coming into contact with the child justice system. The Commission spoke with 150 young people and children, their families and a range of stakeholders who said that prioritising child wellbeing and safety would help keep children away from the criminal justice system. The report calls for governments to listen to the evidence and work together across health, education, social services and justice to improve child wellbeing and safety – and keep communities safe for everyone.
