The Coral Triangle Conservation Fund (CTCF) is the only regional trust fund to focus on the Coral Triangle region. Home to an unparalleled diversity of marine life, this region is often called 'the Nursery of the seas' as it hosts 35% of the world's most resilient reefs and hence is critical in repopulating other reefs in the face of climate change. The marine resources within the Coral Triangle also directly sustain the livelihood of more than 120 million people. Yet, despite the region’s importance, it remains severely underfunded. This is where the CTCF comes in. As a regional fund backed by the The Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF), the CTCF facilitates groundbreaking collaborative conservation efforts across six nations, to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030. #CoralTriangle #ForCoral #OceanConservation #30x30 #SDG14 Image Credit: Tracy Jennings/ Ocean Image Bank

Happy #WorldReefDay! Coral reefs are crucial habitats for marine life, yet experts warn that up to 90% of coral reefs could be severely degraded by 2050 if we don't take action now. That's why Marine Conservation Pakistan is actively working on solutions to protect and restore these unique ecosystems in Pakistan. The importance of healthy coral reefs to their surrounding communities cannot be understated, they not only provide them with food and revenue (through fisheries and tourism), but also stave off coastal erosion, thereby safeguarding land property from damage and reducing the risk of population displacement. Coral reefs are important and unique ecosystems that are self-sustaining and provide vital support for marine life. They play a crucial role in the tropical marine environment through their contribution to the food chain, their reef building capacity and their important role in the carbon cycle. #CoralReefs #MCP #MarineConservationPakistan #Pakistan

What are marine protected areas (MPAs)? We've put together a handy guide to these important methods of marine conservation in the form of Frequently Asked Questions. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/etyMzBBR Scotland’s seas have 20 offshore marine protected areas, which aim to safeguard our precious deep-sea ecosystems. But 10 years after their designation, they are still lacking proper protection. Add your voice to the campaign to save Scottish seas: https://lnkd.in/eAfsxHYU

United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has designated March 1st as World Seagrass Day! Did you know? Seagrass is a true flowering plant that can live in the sea. Seagrass meadows are important for supporting commercial fisheries, as they provide habitat, feeding grounds, and spawning grounds for various marine life. Not only that, seagrass has the ability to absorb carbon and stabilize sediment! What can you do? Conserving seagrass is important for maintaining the stability of the 3 pillars of the marine ecosystem. You can help by reducing your use of single-use plastics, not littering in rivers and the sea, supporting organizations that focus on seagrass conservation, and of course, you can spread the word about the importance of seagrass to others. Together, we can protect seagrass and keep our oceans healthy! #WorldSeagrassDay #Seagrass #Sea #Conservation #Indonesia #Sustainability #Sustainable #MarineConservation #Conservation

A marine protected area (MPA) is a section of the ocean where a government has placed limits on human activity. Many MPAs allow people to use the area in ways that do not damage the environment. Some ban fishing. A few do not allow people to enter the area at all.MPAs are established in order to ensure that resources are sustainable—that they will not run out. By having limits that prevent overfishing, these MPAs ensure that fish can reproduce and maintain healthy populations. This enables people to fish year after year, maintaining their way of life. https://lnkd.in/dXMBfBns #education #MPA #marineprotectedarea #life #fishing #naturalcapital #industry #conservation #biodiversity #community #sustainability #culture #oceans National Geographic Society

🚨 An Emergency Order is needed NOW to protect southern resident killer whales from imminent threats to their survival. WWF-Canada alongside other conservation groups have sent a petition to Fisheries & Oceans Minister Diane Lebouthiller and Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault demanding they do more to save this endangered population of just 74 whales. The seasonal SRKW measures announced Monday largely continue existing measures for protection that are not sufficient for recovery of these whales who now face increased threats with a 7-fold increase in oil tanker traffic from the TMX pipeline. The federal government is failing these endangered whales and hasn't even acted on their *own* recommendations from the Canada Energy Regulator | Régie de l’énergie du Canada for a cumulative effects management plan to reduce underwater noise, collision risk and contaminant levels from vessel traffic in SKRW's critical habitat. “Southern resident killer whales are closer to extinction today than they were 20 years ago. They are in desperate need of a lifeline and substantially increased protection from the multiple threats they face.” – Hussein A., lead specialist marine conservation for WWF-Canada We need stronger measures to reduce underwater noise disturbances from ships, action to increase the availability of Chinook salmon, and prohibition on the dumping of harmful ship waste. The groups behind the petition are the David Suzuki Foundation, Georgia Strait Alliance, Living Oceans Society, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Raincoast Conservation Foundation, and WWF-Canada. Yesterday the #RedsideDace Recovery Strategy and Action Plan was finalized by Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada (DFO). Within the Recovery Strategy, they include the #criticalhabitat definition, which mirrors that of Section 29 of Ontario Regulation 829/21 (meander belt width + 30 m). What does this mean? Similar to the existing process, any alteration within Redside Dace habitat will require discussions (and potential permitting) with the Environment, Conservation and Parks | Environnement, Protection de la nature et Parcs (MECP) and DFO. Additional permitting may now be required under the Species at Risk Act (SARA). Link to the Recovery Strategy and Action Plan here: https://lnkd.in/gD9EJibh. #environmentalpermitting #speciesatrisk
