Those who live with diabetes can face unique mental health challenges. The day-to-day management — blood sugar monitoring, medication administration, meal planning and doctor’s appointments — can be overwhelming. For #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, we’re sharing 6 affirmations for people who live with diabetes. These affirmations can help reset your mindset and shift your perspective toward a more positive outlook. 1. I will not let my diagnosis define me. 2. I'm proud of myself for staying strong. 3. I have the right tools in my diabetes toolkit. 4. I show kindness to myself and others. 5. I feel secure and surrounded by support. 6. I let go of shame and guilt easily. Remember, mental well-being is just as important as physical health. If any of these affirmations resonate with you, tell us why in the comments. #MentalHealthMatters #MentalHealthAwareness #DiabetesCommunity What is GVOKE? GVOKE is a prescription medicine used to treat very low blood sugar (severe hypoglycemia) in people with diabetes ages 2 years and above. It is not known if GVOKE is safe and effective in children under 2 years of age. Do not use GVOKE if: you have a tumor in the gland on top of your kidneys (adrenal gland) called a pheochromocytoma, as it may cause a substantial increase in blood pressure; you have a tumor in your pancreas called an insulinoma, as it may cause low blood sugar; or if you are allergic to glucagon or any inactive ingredient in GVOKE. GVOKE may cause other serious side effects, such as serious skin rash -- in certain people with a tumor in their pancreas called a glucagonoma; Serious allergic reactions -- Call your doctor or get medical help right away if you have a serious allergic reaction including rash, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure. Important that we keep recognising the connection ( which seems obvious in some ways)... our brains and bodies are connected! EDS/JHS/Hypermobility and ADHD/DCD/ASD overlap in some cases. Worth remembering why we need a whole person approach. Also see:https://lnkd.in/eGw8SXd9

News 📣 90% of people with hypermobility which can affect the whole body, tissues, systems and organs, have 9 common Gastrointestinal (GI) issues (Entry to Exit). Dint forget the impact on mental health either. It’s not all in our heads but fear of pain can lead to disordered eating ARFID and misattribution of physical health to longstanding trauma. ‘Gastrointestinal disorders (GI) are among the most common manifestations of hEDS/HSD, (hypermobility) with studies reporting ~90% of patients experience symptoms of diseases of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs). GI symptoms may include dysphagia, reflux, postprandial fullness, bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. Patients often attribute symptoms to eating, which can generate food fears and changes in appetite that impact nutritional intake and contribute to disordered eating patterns." I was recently at a conference and one of the speakers showed a slide stating the workdays lost due to different conditions specifically focusing on mental health: Heart disease: 7 days per year Allergies: 8 days per year Respiratory disorders: 15 days per year Cancers: 17 days per year Mental illness: 25 days per year Three things stood out to me: 1. Nowhere on the list was Irritable bowel syndrome or Irritable bowel disorder: Yet, recent data shows people with IBS/IBD miss 2-3 days per MONTH! That is 24-36 per YEAR! 2. Your Gut sends 90% of signals to your brain and your brain only 10% to your GUT, why are we not connecting mental health to GUT health? 3. Women who have IBS are 3x more likely to suffer from anxiety and or depression than the general public. I guess it is just a tummy ache and people should toughen up and power through:) If we want to improve the mental health crisis that continues to get worse, we can not only focus on mental health. We have to add digestive health to the strategy doc. If anyone wants to nerd out with me on the science ( nitric oxide, dopamine, neurotransmitters, glutamate, depression, lithium, fructose, etc.) ping me on the side. #yourbodyisconnected #digestivehealth #guthealth #wellbeing #mentalhealth

Article Content Warning ⚠️ Eating Disorders/Behaviors, mention of suicide attempts Some may or may not know that I pursued dietetics to specialize in eating disorders. While it is not my primary field, I am never far removed from it, whether it is due to colleagues of mine who work in the field or those I know who have and continue to suffer from these horrible illnesses. I am always invested in preventing eating disorders, and supporting treatment and recovery. This article is a long one, and admittedly I was challenged to read it. I still feel challenged by it. I am an eternal optimist, believer of hope and cures, and yet, at what point is it out of the hands of the provider? At what point is a cure not attainable? Is a patient with severe anorexia able to make the choice to succumb to their illness? I am curious of your thoughts. #eatingdisorderrecovery #edrecovery #anorexia #terminalanorexia #palliativecare #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness https://lnkd.in/edN2XGSj

That feeling when you wake up and wonder, who do I need to apologize to? It's an awful one 🥴 However, it's also preventable. Drinking can be fun, but it also has some steep consequences. Excessive alcohol use has immediate effects that increase the risk of many harmful health conditions including injuries, such as motor vehicle crashes, falls, drownings, and burns. It can also cause alcohol poisoning, miscarriage, stillbirth, or fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) among pregnant women. Over time, excessive alcohol use can lead to the development of chronic diseases and other serious problems including: - High blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease, and digestive problems. - Cancer of the breast, mouth, throat, esophagus, voice box, liver, colon, and rectum. - Weakening of the immune system increases the chances of getting sick. - Learning and memory problems, including dementia and poor school performance. - Mental health problems, including depression and anxiety. - Social problems, including family problems, job-related problems, and unemployment. By not drinking too much, you can reduce the risk of these short- and long-term health risks. #SLCo #DrinkLess
