Eco-Industrial Parks: Powerhouses of the Circular Economy Imagine an industrial zone where one company's "waste" becomes another's valuable resource. This is the essence of Eco-Industrial Parks (EIPs), a powerful concept that champions the principles of the circular economy. In contrast to the traditional linear economy (take-make-dispose), the circular economy emphasizes keeping resources in use for as long as possible. EIPs achieve this by fostering collaboration between businesses within the park. Here's how: - Industrial Symbiosis: Companies exchange byproducts or waste streams that can be reused as raw materials by others. Imagine a food processing plant generating food scraps used by a biogas facility to create clean energy. -Shared Infrastructure: EIPs can invest in shared utilities like water treatment plants or renewable energy sources, reducing costs and environmental impact for all tenants. - Knowledge Sharing: Collaboration creates a platform for businesses to share best practices in sustainability and resource efficiency. The benefits are numerous: -Reduced Waste: EIPs minimize waste generation and promote resource recovery, lessening the burden on landfills and the environment. -Cost Savings: Companies save money by utilizing waste streams and sharing resources. -Enhanced Competitiveness: EIPs foster innovation and create a more sustainable image for businesses within the park. EIPs are a key driver of the circular economy transition. Business Finland wrapped up World Circular Economy Forum WCEF 2024 held in Brussels. Two company cases were highlighted: Carbonaide and Rester Oy. Concrete and textiles. Circular Innovation Challenge Top 3 finalists   SOLVE, the Vikāra Institute and the V&A Waterfront are delighted to announce the Top 4 finalists in our annual Circular Innovation Challenge. After some tough deliberation,our panel of circular economy experts decided on the following Top 4 finalists (in alphabetical order):   EWaste Africa Leafline (https://leafline.co.za/) NUDE FOODS Zerocrete (https://zerocrete.co.za/)    This Challenge aims to foster a new wave of innovators, change-makers, and thought leaders in the #Circular Economy. Our top 4 will pitch their idea to a panel of experts in the circularity field at Vikára’s annual conference on 22 October. The winner will be awarded a cash prize, training to speak to any specific needs they have, mentorship, and access to business contacts along with excellent exposure to other businesses and potential customers through testing their product or service at the V&A. #circularinnovation2024

Advancing Sustainable Industry and Circular Economy 🌍 ACT is proud to be part of a EU-funded project, THESEUS focused on enhancing #sustainability and #circulareconomy practices through the establishment of a Hub for Circularity (H4C). With 230 million NOK secured for circular innovations, this project aims to recycle surplus resources like materials, heat, and water to develop greener industrial processes. The goal is to establish an industrial-urban symbiosis with our partners: SINTEF Helgeland Kunnskapsparken Helgeland AS, Nordland fylkeskommune, Mo Industripark AS, Rana Utvikling AS, and Rana kommune, driving regional collaboration and sustainable development. We’re excited to support technological innovations like the concrete recycling initiative by Helgeland Ferdigbetong, with SINTEF leading local efforts. This collaboration will serve as a model for other European locations as part of the larger EU project.
