🚀 Maximising the Economic and Social Value of Research Portfolios: Successful Completion of Our Pilot Programme! 🚀 I was thrilled to see the successful delivery of the final session of our latest innovative training programme 'Research to Value', which aims to unlock the latent commercial opportunities hidden within research portfolios. Great to work with Zach Sorrells to create this programme after we had a flash of inspiration talking to Orla Kelly who commissioned it. It saw pairs of professional service staff and researchers buddy up to learn an innovation management process to define commercial opportunities and the unknowns associated with them. The pairs learned ‘fast and cheap’ methods essential for validating and quantifying opportunities to fit within the time constraints of competing work priorities. This 'live case study' methodology ensured the programme was output-focused and an investment of time rather than taking time out. Six pairs from different Scottish Universities took part and the feedback has been amazing. We’ll share more fully what we’ve learned when we’ve completed the evaluation. If you want to hear more about the programme we're hosting a webinar in July - Sign up now ⇨ https://lnkd.in/gKiAZT8w Thank you to everyone who contributed to this success! Innovation isn't just a buzzword—it's the lifeblood of progress. Recently, I had an inspiring conversation with Pradorn Sureephong or Ajarn Dorn, Vice Director of the College of Arts, Media and Technology of Chiang Mai University. We delved into the future of innovation, and what I discovered left me exhilarated. Chiang Mai University's Innovation Village is more than a physical space—it's a mindset. By bridging the public and private sectors, it has become a fertile ground for students and startups alike. During our discussion, Ajarn Dorn emphasized the need to weave soft skills into academic curricula. Communication, creative thinking, and adaptability—these are the skills that fuel innovation. But integrating them isn't always straightforward. It requires a willingness to embrace trial and error, to learn from setbacks, and to celebrate breakthroughs. Leaders like Ajarn Dorn are shaping the future. They're not just talking about innovation; they're living it. As we prepare the next generation for the workplace, we must equip them with these essential skills. Personally, I'm thrilled at the prospect of contributing to the initiatives that empower young minds to thrive in a dynamic world. What skills do you believe are vital for fostering innovation? #InnovationMatters #ContinuousImprovement #CreativeThinking

This week Césaré Cejas, PhD attended the Welcome event for The Foundation For Science and Technology's Future Leaders Programme at the Royal Society. The events focus was “Scaling up deep technology companies in the UK: challenges and solutions” ⬇ Our Key Takeaways: ⬇ 💡 The UK is great at generating innovation, incubating and supporting early-stage companies via Innovate UK; but for these companies to scale-up, UK capital infrastructure is still a challenge and oftentimes, companies look for foreign investment (e.g. US) 🔬 Foreign funds look into the UK due to the dynamic innovation culture. Government policies should continue to create a business environment where ideas are allowed to be tested. And while such policies are in place, sometimes there is disconnect between government policy and action. More scrutiny needed! 🛠 In some industry areas, skills shortages are real. Apart from policy support to bringing skills into the country, training and personal development support also needs to be company priority for upskilling employees. The enhances the “breadth of knowledge” that allows people to make relevent interdisciplinary decisions. ⚙ Clusters play a vital role in creating healthy business environments and should continue to be developed and/or accelerated. 🌍The UK should continue to foster a place that not only supports ideas to become early-stage ventures but to also to transform them into global leaders - while keeping the core business base within the country. #fst #fstscaleup #foundationleadersprogramme #royalsociety #foundationofscienceandtechnology

Deputy Director of Impact and Engagement, Enterprise Research Centre, University of Warwick Business School
💡 Really insightful day at the Chartered Association of Business Schools Interdisciplinary Research Symposium in Bristol yesterday. The focus was both on the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of interdisciplinary research. Why is it important, and how can business schools catalyse more of it. I was pleased to be invited to speak about our fantastic interdisciplinary work at the Enterprise Research Centre (UK) at University of Warwick - Warwick Business School A few key points stood out during the day for me: 💡 There is a clear case for IDR in the context of the current time – both due to the complexity of the societal problems we face and also the pressure on business schools to demonstrate more clearly how they can make a difference and be resilient. 💡 Research Councils are recognising the importance of IDR, particularly because of its ability to tackle complex problems in a range of areas. More funding is being made available, but researchers need to pay more attention to how they integrate multiple approaches so that projects are truly interdisciplinary. 💡 Leadership is crucial in terms of creating an environment in which IDR can flourish, spaces need to be created where ideas can be exchanged and new connections made, and careers paths need to recognise the IDR route. Business schools need to have confidence in the unique contribution they can make to IDR projects – in terms of bringing the business perspective and connections. 💡 Relationship building is key to successful IDR, and this is frequently time-consuming. High quality support from professional staff is crucial and needs more resourcing. A great discussion, which I’m sure will continue. And we got to go on a historic boat too on a beautiful day! What’s not to like?! ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council Jennifer Johns Steve Johnson Leroy White Adnan Bayyat, PhD Alison Park
