In addition to the eight new accessibility attributes we announced last week, we’re rolling out new improvements throughout the app and website to better support people with visual impairments. New AI-powered alternative text for photos on restaurant, food and nightlife business pages will help people who use screen readers better understand the details and context of a photo. Plus, we’ve improved color contrast on the platform and enhanced the overall screen reader experience. We look forward to continuing our work to create a more accessible and inclusive world for everyone, and hope you'll join us in our journey. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dpfdUYGf.

As a user of both a screen reader and magnifier, carousels are ever frustrating. Here's just a few brief examples. • On mobile using a screen reader, each and every option on a carousel will be announced. It's not easy or intuitive to skip to the next section. Imagine expecting everyone to read everything on a carousel. • Font resizing often cuts off text in carousels, making many carousels limited in use or completely unusable. • Many carousels are designed in such a way that as a visually impaired user, I can't even recognize that it is a carousel or horizontally scrolling menu and I end up missing functionality in an app or website.

Accessibility is more than a requirement; it's a commitment to equity that enables everyone to participate fully in our digital society. The European Accessibility Act pushes for a barrier-free user experience on digital platforms, covering e-commerce, banking services, e-books, and much more, making inclusivity the norm rather than the exception. The deadline for compliance is fast approaching, with companies required to meet these standards by June 28, 2025. This timeline gives organisations a crucial window to adapt, innovate, and lead by example in building a more accessible and inclusive digital world. Come along to a free gravity9 workshop (online/onsite) hosted by Paul O’Shaughnessy and Andrew Newman to discover insights on navigating the European Accessibility Act (EEA). Need help with identifying your current status on the road to AAA accessibility? Some #corporate #brands are beginning to argue that DEI initiatives must come to an end. I strongly disagree. These brands desire consumers to purchase their products and services. Our community, which includes over a billion people and our allies, is gathering strength. We will not support brands that fail to include everyone. Plus we are aging societies and as we age we often acquire disabilities. This exclusion deeply saddens me, especially as I observe brands that previously prioritized accessibility suddenly halting these efforts. This shift is alarming for our community. It is essential to understand that this approach is unacceptable. Economic challenges should not be an excuse to sideline accessibility and inclusion. Our community requires access and representation. We are convening in large numbers to ensure we are discoverable and heard. It is crucial that everyone speaks up to uphold and protect all rights. Here is example. It is sad to see #Sonos make this decision when they had been leading on #accessibility. Sonos, Inc. has broken accessibility for its blind users. Now they must repair the app and repair trust. The Importance of Website Accessibility for Businesses Websites accessible to people with disabilities will enable those who are visually impaired, have cognitive issues, and have other motor skill impairments to participate in the digital world, creating job opportunities and more inclusion in society. https://lnkd.in/dd5UfpMr Since COVID, this is more apparent as even regular activities have transferred to the internet, like ordering a cab, booking a doctor’s appointment, or checking bus times. As these web interactions become fundamental to our daily lives, web accessibility has become more critical. Ensuring your website complies with the ACA and AODA standards can help create a more inclusive society that gives everyone a fair chance to participate in the digital world. https://lnkd.in/dHPCtjmU #accessibility #disability #disabilityawareness #disabled #accessible #disabilityadvocate #disabilityrights #visualimpairment #inclusionmatters #disabilityinclusion #accessibilityforall #accessibilitymatters

Interesting to note in Yelp's most recent update that not only are they improving transparency and information on accessibility for restaurants and other locations, they are improving the accessibility of their own website and working to put pressure on/facilitate information for business to improve their accessibility. When we design with the range of needs in mind, we do better for all. https://lnkd.in/gFBixjyD

It's a common misconception that accessibility only benefits disabled people. Accessibility means removing barriers so that everyone can participate in society with ease (including online!) Accessible design means good design. It is clear, easy to understand and quick to navigate. It is a friction free experience. Sign up for my weekly newsletter and learn how you can make your content accessible. The link is in my bio. . Image description: There are two pictures of a blonde woman. Image 1. Her face is wrinkled up in disgust - "Isn't accessibility just for disabled people?" 2. Her eyebrows are she looks both delighted and curious - "It can improve SEO and optimise UX? Ok, I'm listening." . #CreatorContentTips #Disability #Accessibility #DigitalAccessibility #WebAccessibility #SocialMediaTips #Inclusion #MarketingForSmallBusiness #ContentTips #ContentHelp #WebsiteDesign #InclusionRevolution #DisabledContentCreator

Accessibility, and the way it is managed and governed within an organization, are crucial topics. Failing to address accessibility can lead to poor design and code, which ultimately creates barriers for users. In a recent Elisa blog post, I explored this subject in depth, gathering insights from Elisa’s top management. The article highlights how Elisa is strategically approaching accessibility, the steps being taken to effectively manage and govern it - and where the journey goes.
Did you know that 1 in 3 adults in Finland have some disability? I didn't but luckily Mathias Leopold Schach knew and wrote a extensive blog about the subject and how Elisa is doing it's part on digital accessibility. https://lnkd.in/dZMQdzRD

3 things people worry about when it comes to accessibility. (Hint: they're not the right things) 1. Accessibility audits 2. Meetings to convince stakeholders 3. Raising awareness One thing that moves the needle for people with disabilities: **Shipping an accessible product** When you're relying on the 100+ page audit report to go into a meeting to convince stakeholders to prioritise accessibility, all the while raising awareness inside your team, you're winning battles but losing the war. Unless you ship an accessible product, the people you're trying to help won't benefit at all. No one will be able to appreciate all those days spent reading audits, the countless meetings or you raising awareness with your team. Just. Get. Shit. Done. Why? Because after all the auditing, and the meetings, and the awareness raising, they still can't use your site!
