A domestic violence art exhibition? Derrick, why are you wasting your time with artists? I hear that feedback sometimes when I meet with investors and donors. My nonprofit, Duplessy Foundation, has helped women + minority founders generate $10M+ in the last 2 years. Three of our founders have generated $2M+ in 2023. It would be easy for me to focus on the bigger businesses. The problem is money isn’t my sole focus. When I met Anne Plaisance in 2019, she had the ‘artiste’ starter kit. Black turtleneck (✅) Black leather portfolio (✅) French (✅) Her project Wonder Women Now was a photography book that highlighted survivors of domestic violence. Heroic poses were accentuated with masks that transformed their identity from victim to empowered. Over the next year, I worked with Anne to expand this project to cities around the world. Then she disappeared - for 2 weeks Anne resurfaced in a new home and hidden story. Anne herself was a survivor of domestic violence. Over the next year, I coached her through a new version of Wonder Women Now. It’s an interactive walk through a home in a wealthy suburb Each room is scattered with everyday objects and art Each room conveys a sequence of emotions for survivors of domestic violence Audio of the emotional ride from a mother and her child bring the rooms to life Oct 19, Anne is having an opening night of the exhibition in Cambridge. "Public Art in Review; Volume 1" by UAP | Art in public spaces plays a distinguishing role in our country’s history and culture. It reflects and reveals our society, enhances meaning in our civic spaces, and adds uniqueness to our communities. Public art humanizes the built environment. It provides an intersection between past, present, and future; between disciplines and ideas.

What do you think, can a doll’s house be haunted? Could the replica of a homestead be occupied by the entity of a former inhabitant? Could a child spirit be so attached to a Dolls’ house that they refuse to leave it? Dollhouses open up a whole world of imagination for children, even into adulthood some remain enamored by their beauty and the fantasy world they present. But are they always friendly and welcoming? A quick Google search will bring up some intriguing stories of Paranormal Dollhouses, replica castles, cabins, etc. We can’t say for absolute certainty that this replica is haunted, but what we can say is, we had quite a bit of interaction with it during our investigations and previous tours at Brant Historical. Devices we sat on the replica house, signaled and flashed both when the room was empty & when we were present. It responded to requests from us to activate equipment in response to questions. Rumor has it, that there may be the spirit of a child on the upper floor, close to the replica house... Lucky for us, we get to go back to BHS and see if the spirits will communicate with us again. And, you are invited to join us! February 24th beginning at 6:45 pm the TOPS team will be investigating BHS. We will do this in segments beginning at 6:45 then again at 8:15, 9:45, and 11:15, and finally on the midnight tour, we will hold an OUIJA session up in the very creepy attic to give the spirits of the house a whole new opportunity to communicate. Ticket prices are $30.00 for the first 4 timeslots. The midnight OUIJA session is $40.00. We will cap out the number of people at 10 per timeslot. Tickets must be purchased at or through the museum. "In the early morning hours of a late-winter day in 1990, two men dressed as police officers got into an art museum. They tied up the two guards on duty in the basement and proceeded to grab 13 pieces of art, most notably two Rembrandts and a Vermeer. They left with their loot and were never caught. The value of the stolen art was estimated at $200 million dollars. At the time it was the biggest art heist ever. Despite intense investigations, the case remains unsolved. This isn't the plot of a movie. It's something that happened at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. If you haven't been to this museum, there are two things you should know: 1. You should visit, any chance you get. It's one of the coolest places in Boston. 2. It's different from most museums. More crowded with art from everywhere and from across the centuries. It's almost chaotic, compared to most museums, and that's because Isabella Stewart Gardner, a wealthy art collector, made it that way. On her death she created a $1 million endowment and stipulated that the collection be permanently exhibited without any kind of change. Gardner's stipulation means that when those pieces of art were stolen, museum officials couldn't just rearrange the collection to fill the empty spots. They had to leave empty frames where the pieces had been. It's probably not surprising that those empty frames are the most popular and sought-out things exhibited in the entire amazing museum. There's a reason visitors to the museum love the empty picture frames. They tell a story. A dramatic story that takes no background knowledge to understand and appreciate. I'm telling you this for a reason that impacts fundraisers in a big way: People -- all people, including your donors -- love stories. But they don't love all stories equally. And that means they they may not care about the story you want them to love. They prefer to look at the empty picture frames," Jeff Brooks wrote in his blog. As I reflect on the season that is just now drawing to a close (but not quite! Don't miss jess pretty's call and response, details in bio), I find myself continually awe- and/or dumb-struck by how starkly dichotomous things feel these days. I'll explain: I'm an artist; and I co-direct an organization which lives and breathes and depends upon the work of artists; and I have witnessed, this year, a return to a sense of risk-taking, of spectacular failure, of big swings, of "leaving it all on the stage", of keenly interested eyes and faces and bodies in the audience, of post-show conversations at the bar, of commitment to (and gathering together in shared commitment to) the thing. The thing that brought me, for better or worse, to this beautiful and disastrous line of work, in the first place. It's so heartening, I could cry. This year has ALSO been marked - or scarred - by a series of profoundly destabilizing funding setbacks. I'm well acquainted with (and have fully internalized) the surreal ups and downs of the not-for-profit life, but, BUT: it feels existential in a way that it hasn't, before now. I could name examples - the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs being chief among them - but life is short. Needless to say, a substantial (for us) chunk of public and private dollars have rapidly disappeared. A number of foundations which have historically supported us are shifting their funding priorities, or simply not funding us anymore; others are closing altogether. It’s real. Should The Chocolate Factory Theater exist? Does New York City, and the world, and the artist community, need a place like ours? Of course it should. Of course it does. And I hope that you agree, because your support is essential to our survival. We do important work. We meaningfully (help to) sustain the lives and careers of artists who bring important, lasting ideas into the world. We pay those artists (110 in FY24, to be precise), and our staff, a living wage. Artistic, administrative (& we’re a very small team, to be clear), and technical labor comprises 80+% of our budget. Yes you read it right it's the name of a newspaper.📰 I know it's strange but it's the name of a French newspaper which gets published once in 4 years i.e on every 29th of February. Let me tell you something about this. This newspaper was started in 1980 by some friends as a joke and it was named after a character of comic magazine who was born on 29th of February. Before 2024 the last copy of it was published in 2020 during Covid Time and you know another interesting fact about it is that 120000 copies of it were sold in 2020 and a big part of its earnings goes towards charity for disabled persons.😮👏 "The 2024 edition includes an article suggesting France doesn’t need schools anymore thanks to artificial intelligence. Another floats the idea of dismantling the Eiffel Tower during the Paris Olympics to reduce security risks -- and having IKEA produce a manual for rebuilding it." and you know what, it also gave a suduko to solve and gives the solution in its next publication i.e after 4 years🤣.
