We at FabricPlus are very excited about expanding our efforts in Falls Prevention! Earlier this year, with the endorsement of Senteret for et aldersvennlig Norge, I became part of the World Health Organization's Age Friendly Cities & Communities Knowledge and Action Hub for Falls Prevention. Older adults are more vulnerable to falling, and in Norway, this risk increases significantly with darkness and ice. This is also a pattern in construction sites, as statistics from STAMI - Statens arbeidsmiljøinstitutt show that older construction workers are also the most exposed to falling risks, and again, during wintertime ⛄ Falls (or fear of falling) among older adults often leads to social isolation, and falls among construction workers many times disables them from continuing to work in construction sites (many need to be retrained into office work, which can be less fulfilling). This new challenge is now spearheaded by Gjensidige, and with support from Design-Driven Innovation funds from Design and Architecture Norway - DOGA, we will work with construction workers to co-design fall prevention measures. Hopefully the learnings from construction sites (controlled environments) will be also applicable to public spaces (uncontrolled environments), and society at large can also benefit from co-creating age-friendly construction sites. Looking forward to getting this project started with winter construction experts Peab & Consto AS, together with Samarbeid for Sikkerhet i bygg og anlegg (SfS BA) & STAMI - Statens arbeidsmiljøinstitutt 👷♂️ 👷♀️ Johannes Nilssen, Trude Pedersen, Petter Berg-Wollan, Lene Jønsson, kjell-are vassmyr, Siri Arntzen-Ratnarajan, Joyce Aguirre, Ingunn Svava Danielsen Lindbach 🚧 AT arkitektur
As I continue to state as the CEO. We encourage people to come to me with their hardest projects. Push us in design and construction. I go into every project with the mindset and true confidence I have the skill and knowledge to perform that project. With a mindset, the project is already done. As a result. It is one of the best products in the industry. Never questioning my skill and knowledge. A positive mindset is a powerful tool. I never second-guess myself or the Team that surrounds me. My Team feeds off my energy. We jump right into it knowing we got this. "The question owners in the building industry need to ask themselves is whether they are accepting the slavery discount." - Our CEO and Founder, Sharon Prince, for a new feature article by the Urban Land Institute (ULI). The piece explores the humanitarian crisis of forced labor in the building materials supply chain and our efforts, along with those by Design for Freedom by Grace Farms Working Group members and other dedicated organizations, to address it. Throughout you'll find critical insights, from an overview of how modern slavery is impacting construction and the built environment, government efforts to act against it, and the ongoing work being done within the industry itself to accelerate the Design for Freedom movement. Significantly, the article notes that "more than 2,500 shipments valued at $2.2 billion of products, including PVCs, solar panels and other building materials, were denied entry to the U.S. between June 2022 and December 2023, including many shipped from other countries than China but had components traced back to the Uyghur region." Yet, there is much to be done. Especially when we consider that approximately 28 million people are in forced labor across the world per the 2022 Global Estimates of Modern Slavery, Forced Labour and Forced Marriage report by the International Labour Organization (noted in the article). Readers will learn about our Toolkit and Report and how they can help point to hotspots and at-risk raw and composite materials, to the movement to "ethically decarbonize" and the intersection of the climate movement with embodied human suffering, and the role of technology. In addition to perspectives from our CEO and Founder, Sharon Prince, the feature includes wisdom from Heidi Creighton, FAIA (Los Angeles branch of the U.S. Green Building Council), Emily Busam (Health Product Declaration Collaborative), Rebecca Stamm (Habitable), Jared A. Gilbert (COOKFOX Architects; Working Group), and John Russell Beaumont (COOKFOX Architects). Thank you to ULI for raising awareness of Design for Freedom and efforts being made to eradicate forced labor within the built environment. You are accelerating the movement! Can public space design positively impact both individual health and the environment? Can we craft environments that actively promote public well-being? Absolutely! How can we achieve this? By acknowledging the diverse needs of individuals, influenced by factors such as their life stage, gender, and background. To accomplish this goal, it's imperative for architects, designers, clients, and decision-makers to comprehend how everyday decisions are shaped, and then use these insights to enhance our choices!
