The new Coalition to Tackle Knife Crime aims to understand why young people become part of violent gangs and to prevent it. It will work with experts to develop an extensive understanding of what causes young people to be involved in violence, providing vital evidence that will drive government policy and holding the government to account on its knife crime commitments. #safety #youngpeople #prevention https://lnkd.in/e4edfM3R

🔵 An epidemic of #guncrime and #gangcrime continues in Sweden - 148 shootings reported so far this year - 20 of them fatal. 🔵 This new article from POLITICO explains how this issue is a politcial problem for Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson: https://lnkd.in/d_TBVB4x 🔵 The impact was felt in the UK again this month after two young men from North London were reported missing in Sweden and two bodies were found in Malmo having been shot and their car burned out. https://lnkd.in/dx92XZZr 🔵 Reuters reported on the issue recently, highlighting how boys from Sweden's youth homes have been drawn into the violence. A police officer is quoted as describing the youth homes as '𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙚𝙙𝙄𝙣 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙨'. The article describes classic Child Criminal Exploitation. Any child can be the victim of #exploitation but being in care is a significant risk factor https://lnkd.in/dg8u-d-R 🔵 The minimum age for criminal responsibility in Sweden is 15 (as opposed to 10 in most of the UK) and those under 18 are very rarely sent to prison. As a result, there is an incentive for gangs to recruit children who are immune from prosecution to conduct shootings and other crimes. 🔵 In the UK, section 45 of the Modern Slavery Act provides a defence for victims of exploitation who commit offences on behalf of their abusers. However His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) have found evidence that the defence can perversely increase the risk of exploitation as offenders tell their recruits that they are immune from prosecution. It seems that children in Sweden may be falling into a similar unintended consequence. The Swedish government are reported to be considering reducing the age of criminal responsibility. 🔵 One tactic being used in Sweden to tackle the violence is the rollout of "security zones" where police can #stopandsearch without suspicion. A similar tactic is used in the UK: Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act gives police the right to search people without reasonable grounds. This can only happen in a defined area for a limited time when a senior officer believes there is a possibility of serious violence, or weapons are involved. #firearms #murder #police

Knife Crime 🔪 Did you hear our MD Glenn Bartlett recently on BBC Tees discussing knife crime in #Teesside? With Middlesbrough being the second highest to Birmingham in the UK 🤯 Some of you may have seen Idris Elba’s campaign in #London, “Don’t Stop your Future” where clothes were laid out to represent victims of knife crime. Between July 2022 to June 2023, 247 teenagers and young adults lost their lives due to knife crime in London. It is one of the most powerful campaigns we’ve witnessed here at CPS, and it highlights just how dangerous it is to carry weapons. Unfortunately, this is also something we see here in Teesside, with teenagers believing that carrying a weapon, will solve their problems, when in reality, it won’t. Our MD Glenn, shared his opinions on knife crime, and why this campaign is so important: “This is surprisingly a more common occurrence we see in #Teesside, with some of our team members that have had weapons drawn on them at some point in their career. It’s just not on, and it’s incredible to see public figures stand up for change, and we hope the Government actually listens this time.” This is just the beginning of this crucial campaign, urging government cooperation. So well done Idris, let’s make a change 👏🏼 📲 | 01642 421078 🔗 | https://lnkd.in/eSWRwKz5

Tackling the Knife Crime Crisis – Time to Act, Time to Change! As highlighted in yesterday's BBC Midlands Report, from the West Midlands Police Museum knife crime continues to be a major issue in the UK, with tragic incidents and a rise in youth involvement that we cannot ignore. "Children are carrying knives because they are scared, not because they want to harm others." This quote from young people during sessions at The James Brindley Foundation reflects the harsh reality - Nicola Neville https://lnkd.in/eD8qzTmS Over 50,000 knife-related incidents were reported in the past year, marking a 4% increase from 2022. But how many more go unreported, leaving us unaware of the accurate scale of this crisis? In cities like #Birmingham, communities are uniting, demanding stronger laws and stricter enforcement against zombie knives. Grieving Parents Speak Out: Mothers who have lost their children to knife crime, like Alison Cope and Charlotte Marshall, are calling for even more stringent regulations. Their message is clear: “We need action before another life is lost.” Many young people are carrying knives out of fear, not malice. Communities and grieving families call for change in enforcement, education, and prevention. As zombie knives are banned, we must focus on the root causes and support community initiatives to make streets safer. It’s time to come together—communities, lawmakers, educators, and businesses—to protect the lives of young people and support initiatives that tackle the root causes of violence. Let’s stand for safety, support prevention programs, and work towards a future where knife crime is no longer normalised. **Breaking the Cycle: Combatting Human Trafficking One Arrest at a Time** The Sheriff's Police Special Victim's Unit VICE Investigators recently executed a successful undercover "John" sting operation near Chicago's #MidwayAirport, leading to the arrest and fining of 10 men for soliciting prostitution. This operation is just one example of the ongoing efforts to disrupt the demand for human trafficking—a crime that often hides in plain sight yet has devastating impacts on individuals and communities. Since 2022, the #CCSPD has arrested and fined over 400 individuals through a series of strategic operations targeting those who perpetuate the demand for human trafficking. Why This Matters: 1. Disrupting the Demand: By focusing on those who seek to exploit, we address a root cause of human trafficking. Reducing demand is critical to breaking the cycle of exploitation and abuse. 2. Community Impact: Human trafficking isn't a distant issue—it's happening in our neighborhoods. The CCSPD's proactive approach helps create safer communities by removing those who contribute to these crimes from our streets. 3. Supporting Victims: Each operation isn't just about arrests; it's about opening pathways to support for victims of trafficking, helping them regain control over their lives. 4. A Call for Awareness and Action: We all have a role. Awareness is the first step in ensuring that we, as a society, do not disregard these crimes. Engage, educate, and support initiatives that combat trafficking and exploitation. Every operation, every arrest, and every fine is a step toward a future where every individual can live free from exploitation and abuse. **Because safety, dignity, and freedom should never be negotiable. ** #CommunitySafety #HumanTraffickingAwareness #LawEnforcement #PublicSafety #SupportSurvivors #EndExploitation #HumanTrafficking
