In 2023, the #steelindustry, both #carbon and #stainless, reached a #marketvalue of $928 billion, producing ~2 billion tons of steel. Currently, the steel industry accounts for 10% of global #greenhousegas emissions – yet our society will require significant amounts of energy and steel also in the future. By 2050, steel industry #emissions need to be reduced by 90% compared to 2022 levels, a monumental change that requires a deep transformation of steel actors from around the world. How does the future of steel — both for carbon and stainless — look like? 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 Within a complex, multi-continental, and multicultural organization, IAC is tasked with defining and structuring an innovative approach to generate breakthroughs and foundational optimizations for our client's future offerings. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻: 🛠️𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: We helped set up the project team, conducted a comprehensive situational analysis, clarified and quantified objectives, and consolidated input data for analysis. We defined six strategic focus areas to address all cost aspects of a smelter, from carbon cycle to metal cycle. 🤝𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽𝘀: We facilitated creativity sessions focused on challenging paradigms. We combined structured functional approaches with open innovation tools such as marathons and external benchmarks. ⚙️𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: We combined generated ideas to create comprehensive scenarios quickly transferable to projects. We defined optimization axes and ensured future commitment through team engagement sessions. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: IAC's support facilitated the successful execution of the process while ensuring cohesion among different sites, resulting in the generation of promising ideas and scenarios. This project's initial phase concluded with a plenary session where teams ranked the feasibility of proposed optimization axes, ensuring their commitment to future actions. There is much to unpack in this photo. From the outside looking in, it could appear as a simple business lunch. Yet similar to the onion on my bagel and lox, it has many layers. The team at Greenway Steel found me online almost a year ago and crazy enough this was our first time meeting in person. It's a great example of how #digitalmarketing (especially on this platform) is a new form of #networking. Gary Brudner saw a post I made about traveling to #Houston for the Fastmarkets Metals and Mining Scrap and Steel North America 2024 conference and reached out to set up a time to catch up. One of my favorite aspects to this new adventure is connecting folks within (and outside of) our industry. Networking isn't always about a business opportunity. It can bring a new connection, mentorship, friendship and / or new information (like the lack of trees in a certain #Texas city). Many within our industry are hesitant to utilize the online tools at our fingertips.
