About three months ago we released SaaS Boilerplate as open-source - since then, we got more than 1.1k github stars, over 600 people in our Discord community and we observe Development Teams use it on daily basis. BUT… We also got feedback, that the stack is a bit heavy, that you need to know a lot of technologies to get started… Yeah, not all teams can dive into hardcore enterprise-level stack from the get go. We also spotted we need something lightweight for some projects at Apptension… Immidiately after the release of SaaS Boilerplate, my brilliant cofounder Michał Kleszcz started building a lightweight version of SaaS BP based on some most modern tools like Next.js, GraphQL and Apollo and more. Now, I am happy to announce that we just released ALPack - obviously, as open-source. So, if you consider starting a new project and looking for a lightweight yet powerful stack that has some of the most important features for building Apps from day 0 - check it out 👉 https://lnkd.in/dnQ5fzuH #nextjs #react #graphql #startups

A $96,280 bill. Do you see yourself, your project, or your team in the picture below? (image clipped from Jeff's video) I just watched a great, insightful video by YouTuber Jeff Delaney about the recent costs and consequences for real developers (cara.app) using tools like Vercel, Netlify, Heroku, etc. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/ehNvhr5x Here's my advice and words of warning. While I appreciate what these tools offer—quick setup and deployment capabilities—they can become a cost trap as your product scales, especially for new developers and startups. Remember: These tools are excellent for getting started, but to scale properly and avoid hefty bills, you'll eventually need to pivot. If you're struggling with the cost of running your applications in production, let's chat. We have a track record of reducing infrastructure costs on AWS by over half. Have you used these tools before? What was your experience? Should these tools be held more responsible for the infinite scaling they provide to developers? Let me know your thoughts below!

My review of shipfast ⚡ Why you need to pay attention. Good things 👍 + Landing page sections are clean and easy to use. + Great docs for setting up everything (google auth, database, stripe, email, etc). + NextJS allows Static Site Generation at build so my blog is blazing fast. Great for SEO. Not so good 👎 - Uses NextAuth. This is very rigid in how it needs user data to be structured. When using the DynamoDB Adapter, it forces me to structure users and sessions into a way I'm not used to. - No way of doing environments. You can use local development but I still like the idea of having the option for a deployed environment that isn't production. - No request body validation. Have to do this myself. - All documentation expects deployment to Vercel. We've all seen that post about the $97,000 Vercel bill 😬 Why you should care: Even with these limitations I've been able to build an MVP in 2 days. If you try to build this from scratch then you'll spend weeks just getting everything set up. By which time I'll be getting users, earning revenue and building the next set of features, always being one step ahead of you. It also means I could test multiple ideas in a month and see which one takes off best. What are your thoughts on these startup templates? #startup #saas #software

The #LetsGo OSS project I shipped a while ago provides B2B software startups with reference architecture and tooling to accelerate development and eliminate technical debt when building apps in #AWS. The latest release adds support for running asynchronous jobs on a schedule (CRON) and enhances the web component with the dependency on shadcn/ui component library for #nextjs. Read more at https://lnkd.in/eS_XDBB4. The #LetsGo reference architecture and tooling provides the boilerplate for an AWS-based application and includes components most B2B apps need: • marketing site, • management dashboard, • HTTP API, • worker behind a queue, • NEW: worker for scheduled jobs (CRON), • database, • authentication, • payment processing, • devops story. Support for scheduled jobs (CRON) I added in the latest release enables new scenarios, including: • integration with external systems to synchronize data, • maintenance of internal application state. You can read more about CRON support at https://lnkd.in/dQUeGH8X. Lets go!

Hands on CTO; Angel Investor; Startup Founder, Mentor, Advisor and Consultant. Helping startups make good choices.
Did a webinar this morning and a question came up that has come up every time in every discussion in the last 5 years - what do I think about low code tools? My answer has been the same for the last 5 years but it's getting a new addendum - hold onto your hats. The short version is that low code tools are GREAT if you have a really good grasp on the next 12-18 months of your roadmap. If the tool you pick can get you there quickly and keep you going for 12-18 months, you have my blessing. But watch out for limitations because I've seen plenty of startups put together an MVP on a low code platform and then their first client says "this is great and I'd totally use it if you can make the pins on the map have an icon instead of being red" and then you find out that your platform literally can't do that (or not without some major back bends) (I'm looking at you FlutterFlow). But here's the addendum - holy 🐮 - there are so many low code tools out there and half of them will be out of business next year. If you're a founder, how do you know what limitations different tools have and which tool to use and which tools to avoid? And how do you put together a roadmap and weigh it against the hundreds of tools at your disposal? You literally can't. But at the same time, you don't really need a full on CTO (of the FastCTO kind) since you're not really building anything that complex. So I am thinking of trying something new - instead of our traditional model of "borrow a super duper CTO for a few hours here and there to make sure you're doing the right stuff", what if you get access to a space (slack channel, etc) with a couple of low code expert CTOs but also with decades of experience in the industry you're building in so you can chat with them at different forks in the road so they can point you in the right direction? Almost like your own personal stack overflow but full of people you can trust and structured as an accessibly-priced subscription. 🤔 Tell me in the comments what you think!

Is the software industry prioritizing profit over simplicity and innovation? David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of Ruby on Rails, argues that unnecessary complexity and profit-driven decisions are hindering true innovation. He advocates for a return to simplicity and focus on building meaningful products. It's time to rethink our approach to software development and prioritize user needs over technical advancements. #SoftwareSimplicity #InnovationOverComplexity #TechIndustryReflections #SimplicityMatters #DeveloperTools https://lnkd.in/gx6Yak-8
