The new EURORDIS Position Paper on Mental Health and Wellbeing details the significant mental health challenges faced by people living with rare diseases and their families and, crucially, what we can do to remedy them! The paper emphasises the need for specific actions across all policy areas to address these unique needs. The document highlights the connection between physical and mental health and calls for implementing effective programmes, as supported by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution. It advocates for the inclusion of people living with rare diseases in European mental health policies and urges EU Member States to develop national strategies that integrate psychosocial support into standard medical care. #HealthUnion mini-series is back! Today, we are focusing on our action for better 🧠 #mentalhealth for all EU citizens. There is no health without mental health and the data from 2023 speak for themselves: 🔸 46% of EU citizens had an emotional or psychosocial problem in the last 12 months. 🔸 89% of EU citizens agree that mental health promotion is just as important as physical health promotion. 🔸25% of EU citizens report that they or a family member encountered issues accessing mental health services. To effectively fight these statistics and better deal with the mental health challenges, we put forward a new Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health in the summer of 2023, setting out 20 new flagship initiatives and EU-level funding opportunities worth EUR 1.23 billion. Less than a year after its adoption, we can happily report that all 20 new flagship initiatives have been launched and we continue delivering on our promise of improving mental health of our citizens. The Jewish Federations of North America and the Ministry of Health Israel are partnering to launch a new program: Mental Health in the Community. This $14 million initiative will establish 16 community-based mental health centers which will provide accessible, non-stigmatizing mental health services across Israel. The program represents a systemic response to the current mental health emergency in Israel exacerbated by the events of #October7, offering hope and support to those affected by recent traumatic events. The aim of the program is to serve 200,000 people annually and to address the influx of new cases of #PTSD. ICAR Collective’s Executive Director Gila Tolub highlights the importance of strategic planning for these centers, emphasizing the need for clear differentiation and focus areas to avoid duplication of efforts and resource competition and confusion. This initiative paves the way for healing and resilience, offering a beacon of hope during these challenging times. Children’s mental health is an essential component of their overall health and well-being. However, many families are unable to access timely, effective, and culturally responsive mental health care. The good news is that agencies and organizations have many evidence-based policy options to equitably promote children’s mental health — and we’re launching a new webinar series to discuss them. As we commemorate #EuropeanMentalHealthWeek, it's crucial to highlight some of the significant steps made in mental health policy since September 2022.     📅  Key Milestones   September 2022: European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen announces a new mental health initiative 🌱  January 2023: The European Commission launches a call for evidence on 'A Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health’ 📣  June 2023: ‘Communication on a Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health’ is adopted! 📝  December 2023: European Parliament adopts an own-initiative report on mental health 👥    The above actions, particularly the adoption of this report and its comprehensive recommendations, mark a significant step forward in prioritising mental well-being.
