The biggest reputation issues impacting brands in 2024

In 2024 brands are facing a variety of issues that can affect their reputation. The decisions brands make are closely watched, and they require strategic foresight to navigate these challenges.

Our new report broadly looks at four specific crisis types that brands have faced in the first half of 2024, namely food inflation, artificial intelligence and hacks, product-related reputational issues, and lawsuits.

Here are some of the key takeaways from our research:

  • Although rising food prices are not unique to 2024, there is growing public interest in how they are handled, and with what executives at major food brands have to say regarding the issue.
  • Concerns over the future of artificial intelligence are not going anywhere, whether they are voiced from the general public or from within the industry itself.
  • Several brands have faced reputation issues due to their products. This is shown in Target’s wavering decision over Pride merchandise, and in Boeing’s ongoing safety issues that have resulted in long-term coverage.

The topics capturing attention ahead of the first presidential debate

The first presidential debate of the 2024 general election is set to take place tomorrow night. While Biden and Trump are prepping for the evening, we wanted to look at what topics and narratives have been resonating the most online in the week leading up to the major face off.

Biden asked to get drug test.

One of the biggest stories to emerge from coverage of the debate is about former White House physician Ronny Jackson demanding that Biden take a drug test before and after the night. This comes after some Republicans have speculated that Biden might use drugs to perk up before a performance, and there have now been hundreds of stories written about it.

Trump picking a running mate.

Equally notable is the news that Trump has announced he has chosen a running mate and expects that person to attend the debate. Conservative publishers have reported on this the most, with Newsmax having the top story overall.

Reproductive rights will be a major topic.

Finally, a topic that is expected to be a part of Thursday's discussion is reproductive rights. Vice President Kamala Harris stated that "everything is at stake" with reproductive health rights in this election, and that the Biden campaign has stepped up its focus on the issue before the debate.
