Celebrate with Pride!

Celebrate with Pride!

In Canada, Pride Month goes beyond just June! It's celebrated as Pride Season, encompassing a wider range of events throughout the summer, from June to September. Here's a breakdown:

Canadian Pride Season:

  • Importance: Celebrates the 2SLGBTQI+ (Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and additional sexually and gender-diverse) communities in Canada.
  • Events: Pride celebrations include parades, festivals, workshops, film screenings, art exhibits, and community gatherings. These events foster inclusion, acceptance, and visibility for the 2SLGBTQI+ community.
  • History: The first large-scale Pride demonstrations in Canada were held in Vancouver and Ottawa in 1971. Since then, Pride events have grown significantly across the country.

Key Dates:

  • June: Many Pride parades and festivals take place in June, coinciding with the global celebration of Pride Month.
  • Third Week of August: Public Service Pride Week is a dedicated time to recognize the contributions of 2SLGBTQI+ employees in the public service sector.
  • Throughout Summer: Numerous Pride events are organized by local communities across Canada throughout the summer months.

Participating in Pride:

  • Attend Events: Show your support and celebrate diversity by attending local Pride events.
  • Educate Yourself: Learn more about 2SLGBTQI+ identities, challenges, and histories.
  • Advocate for Equality: Support policies and initiatives promoting LGBTQI+ rights.
