🏳️🌈Celebrating Pride in the City of Alexandria

As May transitions into June at City Hall, Pride flags adorn Market Square in preparation for Alexandria Pride.

There is much to be proud of in Alexandria's celebration of Pride. For the 4th year in a row, the City received a rating of 100 (the maximum possible score) on the Human Rights Campaign 's Municipal Equality Index. Only 129 municipalities across the United States share the same rating! This rating is based on the quality of the city government's municipal laws and services offered to LGBTQ+ residents. (I think that's pretty awesome).

Mayor Justin Wilson reads a Pride Proclamation recognizing the city's 7th annual Pride celebration.

In its seventh year, Alexandria celebrated Pride with a Fair in Market Square to kick off the month of June. The Fair featured over 60+ vendors offering services, information, and resources to residents. Featuring a live band, activities, food trucks, and (my personal favorite) a Drag Story Hour offered by the Alexandria Library, it was a lively event that lent itself to some great photos and b-roll.

My favorite event at the Fair was a Drag Story Hour at City Hall, hosted by the Alexandria Library. The hall was completely full!

But wait, there's more...

Coinciding with street paving, a unique opportunity emerged to repaint the crosswalks in front of City Hall. A years-long idea was finally realized, and two crosswalks were painted to proudly display the Pride flag! What's even cooler: they're permanent and here to stay. Alongside a new DASH bus (wrapped with Pride - literally), the Alexandria City Council and City partners dedicated the crosswalk with a ribbon cutting.

Alexandria residents and visitors can now walk with Pride to Market Square, City Hall, and local shops along the intersection of King and Royal Street.

The Alexandria Fair did a great job of kicking off Pride month this year. You can listen to the full reading of the Proclamation below:

Happy Pride, everyone!
