Are Developers a commodity?
Introduction
I have been in the Software Development business for about one and a half years and it has been a big learning experience. Although 1.5 years is a short amount of time I learned a lot along the way. A question that recently rose to my attention is: are developers a commodity in today's world? And to answer this question I think that a much longer article would be needed, I am therefore just outlining my thought process and telling you my view on things.
Why am I making this statement?
A lot of people have been telling me "oh, software development is the future! Study hard and get a job that will make you a lot of money.". This got me thinking and I recall once having this picture in mind, that one day in the future, software developers would become glorified "new age construction workers".
In my view, the longer this Information age progresses the more code libraries, open-source software and ready-made solutions of software will exist, this will naturally lead this industry into being less attractive and more execution-oriented in the sense of "just" executing and not discovering many more new things or technologies.
Take my view with a grain of salt, I have no intention of generalizing over a whole industry in any way shape or form, I just think that these high paying jobs will stop paying such high honoraries, instead, the jobs that relate more to finding solutions to bigger problems will prevail.
Conclusion
Thank you for taking some time out of your day to read my article. I hope to have gotten you thinking about this topic. I believe that thinking about these things from time to time is important to see future opportunities that we would otherwise miss.
I am curious to learn more about your own view on this topic, do you think that I am on spot with my assumptions, or do you believe that I missed the point? Let me know in the comments below!
