A’s For Effort! TDK named to CDP lists for water security & supplier engagement

We're A-listers.

We are proud of our technology improving lives and communities, but what else makes our teams smile ear-to-ear?

Making sure we are actively engaging in practices that help the planet and local communities.

In its annual report for 2022, which was recently released, CDP gave us A's in supplier engagement and water security. The organization scored nearly 15,000 companies, and we're tops!

"Supplier Engagement Leaders" are companies in the top 8% evaluated for their efforts to engage with suppliers regarding climate change and their disclosure of supplier environmental activities and Scope 3 emissions. Scope 3 refers to what our suppliers and end products emit.

Being named to the Supplier Engagement Leader list means we proactively work with our suppliers to ensure sustainability in every part of our value chain. Our environmental commitment spans the entire supply chain, from raw material procurement to product disposal, focusing on reducing environmental impact.

TDK conducts its own Supplier Environmental Award every year to celebrate the top supplier that contributes most to environmental impact reduction activities and information disclosure. Such activities help us move one step closer to being net zero throughout our value chain.

We've made these two CDP lists for the past three years and are on track to make it again. It's like the Honor Roll or Dean's List for responsible companies!

CDP evaluates the data in its yearly reporting procedure, ranking corporations and cities from the highest A to D- and F, according to their progression in revealing information and advancing toward eco-friendly leadership. Using an autonomous scoring system, it assesses the advancement of companies and cities while encouraging climate change and water security initiatives.

"It is a great honor to receive such high praise from CDP," TDK CEO Noboru Saito said in a statement receiving the CDP Water Security Award. "We believe that our technology, especially the sensor technology that we are currently focusing on, will make a significant contribution to water-related issues as addressed in the United Nations SDGs. We are committed to creating valuable solutions to help realize a sustainable and happy society for all people."

WHAT ON EARTH IS CDP?

The CDP – originally known as the Carbon Disclosure Project – is a non-governmental global organization that runs an environmental reporting system and drives companies and governments to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, safeguard water resources and protect forests. Founded in 2000, it has headquarters in London and operates in 50 countries (including Japan, Germany, USA, and China). The nonprofit helps companies, cities, states, and regions measure and disclose their environmental impact, particularly climate change.

CDP operates an international disclosure system, enabling investors, corporations, cities, states, and regions to handle their environmental effects. The global economy relies on CDP as the gold standard in environmental reporting for the most extensive and detailed dataset on corporate and municipal actions.

For that they use a variety of questionnaire forms, including Climate Change, Water Security, and Forests, among others. CDP's questionnaire is divided into 16 categories, consisting of a total of 130 questions. The category for biodiversity is newly added this year. Questions include everything from business strategy and carbon pricing to emissions and achievements.

By participating in this initiative, we can measure our efforts against our environmental goals.

BIG GOALS? BRING 'EM ON!

We aim to be net-zero CO2 emissions throughout our value chain by 2050 and halve life-cycle CO2 emission intensity by 2035, the year when TDK becomes 100 years old.

Concept of Carbon Neutrality by TDK

We already achieved carbon neutrality (in TDK unique way) in 2014 through the concept of balancing CO2 emissions from its manufacturing sites by means of TDK products that improve energy efficiency and thereby contribute to CO2 reduction. Currently we’re promoting further net zero CO2 emissions from the perspective of the entire supply chain.

TDK Environmental Vision 2035 from a life-cycle perspective

"Our goal at TDK Group is to create a more effective use of energy and expand our use of renewable energy toward the realization of net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050." says Saito in his statement for joining RE100.

But guess what? We have a massive goal for this year that we are really excited about:

All of our manufacturing plants in Japan will use electricity derived from 100% renewable energy sources by the end of 2023!

Of note, 48% of electricity used in our plants globally is already sourced from renewable energy.

We act responsibly for everyone, so we are attracting a tomorrow in which we all thrive.

CAN YOU SAY COMMITMENT?

As more and more companies reveal information to CDP, CDP data is becoming one of the world's main sources of information for ESG investment being used by corporations, investment survey firms and data providers in many countries, helping investors and customers to understand the commitment of entities to their sustainability goals.

Part of our environmental promise is through the ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) Bond.

In November 2021, we issued a total of 40 billion yen (approx. $292,868,000) in corporate bonds linked to our sustainability achievement. The environmental objectives to be achieved by 2025 are as follows:

  • Achieve a renewable energy ratio of 50% or more for the electricity consumed.
  • Achieve a CDP climate change score of A- or higher.
  • Improve CO2 emissions per unit of sales revenue by 30% compared to 2014.

If TDK fails to achieve at least two of these three goals, we will donate 0.3% of the total amount of the bond issue to environmental conservation-related organizations.

In addition to our A's, CDP also gave us an A- for our efforts in Climate Change.

We're so close to that A and are committed to making it 3 A's in a row!

As a global technology company, we know the impact we can have on daily life and the planet!

How important is it to you to support companies acting responsibly by becoming faithful stewards of the environment? Let us know in the comments.
