OIL AND GAS NEWS
bp to cut $2bn in costs as profits miss forecasts
BP said it would cut $2bn (£1.6bn) in costs from its business by the end of 2026 after reporting worse than expected profits for the first quarter of the year.
The oil company revealed that its underlying profits fell to $2.7bn for the first three months of 2024 even as it grew its oil and gas production.
Its profits fell from $5bn in the first quarter of last year, to below analyst predictions of almost $2.9bn, in part owing to falling gas prices and an unplanned outage at a large BP refinery in the US.
BP told investors it would maintain the pace of its share buybacks despite the worse than expected start to the year by acquiring $3.5bn of shares in the first half of the year.
BP has paid a total of $27.4bn to shareholders since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 triggered a surge in global oil and gas prices and record profits across the industry, according to analysis by Global Witness .
BP’s payouts have lagged behind its rivals after the company was forced to take a post-tax charge of $24.4bn after exiting its almost one-fifth shareholding in the Russian oil company Rosneft and its other businesses in Russia.

Nigeria Launches Oil and Gas Licensing Round
Nigeria launched this week a new oil and gas licensing round, inviting bids for as many as 12 onshore and offshore blocks and promising transparency in the bidding process.
At the ongoing Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, Texas, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) announced the start of the 2024 Licensing Round.
During his speech at OTC to announce the bidding round, the commission’s chief executive Gbenga Komolafe “reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to advancing its oil and gas sector and highlighted incentives by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership aimed at attracting the attention and involvement of international investors,” NUPRC said in a statement on Wednesday.
“While acknowledging the changing dynamics of the energy landscape, the CCE observed that Nigeria has adopted a pragmatic approach, ensuring competitive entry fees and commercial viability for investment,” the commission added.

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
Renewable energy passes 30% of world’s electricity supply
Renewable energy accounted for more than 30% of the world’s electricity for the first time last year following a rapid rise in wind and solar power, according to new figures.
A report on the global power system has found that the world may be on the brink of driving down fossil fuel generation, even as overall demand for electricity continues to rise.
Clean electricity has already helped to slow the growth in fossil fuels by almost two-thirds in the past 10 years, according to the report by climate thinktank Ember . It found that renewables have grown from 19% of electricity in 2000 to more than 30% of global electricity last year.
“The renewables future has arrived,” said Dave Jones Ember’s director of global insights. “Solar, in particular, is accelerating faster than anyone thought possible.”
Solar was the main supplier of electricity growth, according to Ember, adding more than twice as much new electricity generation as coal in 2023.

Decline in US wind generation raises bigger concerns than El Niño
The wind is blowing slower these days in the US. Wind power fell last year for the first time since the 1990s, despite new installed capacity, the Energy Information Administration reported last week. While the overall reduction was small (roughly 2 per cent), crucial wind states reported larger drops, such as Iowa, where output fell 8.5 per cent year over year. Preliminary figures for early 2024 also show similar declines.
Slower wind speeds from the naturally occurring El Niño weather phenomenon drove lower generation. Consultancy DNV, which advises on US wind projects, saw a 5 per cent decline in wind speeds in 2023 from the 20-year average. Conditions are expected to normalise later this year.
“Everything dropped,” said Bea Brailey at DNV - Oil & Gas , adding that the current El Niño event was the “third-strongest in the past 25 years”. “Fluctuations on this sort of timescale do happen, but this is the strongest one that we’ve seen for quite a long time.”
NextEra Energy Resources , the largest US renewable developer, reported that 2023 was the lowest year on record for wind resources at its facilities in the past 30 years. January marked the lowest wind resources the company has tracked in the first month of the year, according to a company spokesperson.

NUCLEAR & POWER NEWS
UK first in Europe to invest in next generation of nuclear fuel
The UK will be the first European nation to produce advanced nuclear fuel – a market currently dominated by Russia – to help fuel nuclear power plants at home and abroad. This is part of the government plan to push Putin out of the global energy market and drive down energy bills.
The UK will build Europe’s first facility to power future nuclear reactors - helping to isolate Russia from global energy markets, boost British energy security and provide reliable, affordable energy.
The government is awarding £196 million to Urenco Global to build a uranium enrichment facility. This will produce fuel by 2031 that would be ready to export or use domestically, and could power UK homes in the next decade. It will put an end to Russia’s reign as the only commercial producer of high-assay low enriched uranium (HALEU) and ensure other countries are not reliant on Russian exports.
The new facility will support around 400 highly-skilled jobs, helping to boost the local supply chain and grow the economy. Located at Capenhurst in Cheshire, this will cement the status of the North-West of England as a world leader in nuclear fuel production. This builds on the Prime Minister’s ‘national endeavour’ to secure the future of the UK’s thriving nuclear industry – investing at least £763 million in skills, jobs, and education.

EV & BATTERY NEWS
Northern Ireland construction firm completes £6.9million battery energy storage system in Antrim
Northern Ireland construction firm Graham has completed a £6.9million state-of-the-art battery energy storage system at Dunore Point Water Treatment Works (WTW), on behalf of client NI Water.
The Co Down firm began construction in February 2023 to deliver NI Water's goals of reducing its carbon footprint after becoming one of the first public sector organisations to install a battery energy storage system.
The 4.1 MW battery is powered by an existing solar farm at one of NI Water’s largest water treatment plants, Dunore Point, Antrim.
The battery boasts a 5.6 MWh (megawatt hour) total capacity which helps to store surplus energy generated onsite from c.24,000 solar panels.
During periods of low customer demand, NI Water can store this renewable energy to use later during peak times. The company can therefore power its operations at a lower cost and keep water flowing.
