OIL AND GAS NEWS

Cop28 president says his firm will keep investing in oil

The president of the Cop28 climate summit will continue with his oil company’s record investment in oil and gas production, despite coordinating a global deal to “transition away” from fossil fuels.

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber , who is also the chief executive of the United Arab Emirates’ national oil and gas company, ADNOC Group , told the Guardian the company had to satisfy demand for fossil fuels.

“My approach is very simple: it is that we will continue to act as a responsible, reliable supplier of low-carbon energy, and the world will need the lowest-carbon barrels at the lowest cost,” he said, arguing that Adnoc’s hydrocarbons are lower carbon because they are extracted efficiently and with less leakage than other sources.

“At the end of the day, remember, it is the demand that will decide and dictate what sort of energy source will help meet the growing global energy requirements,” he added.

Norway oil and gas investments set to soar in 2024

Oil and gas companies operating in Norway are expected to invest 240 billion Norwegian crowns ($21.85 billion) in 2024, up from 220.5 billion in 2023, and more than previously expected, an industry group said on Wednesday.

Offshore Norway, which published the new forecast based on a survey of its members, had previously predicted 2024 oil and gas investments would amount to 194.3 billion crowns.

The rise was the result of new developments, increased scope of ongoing projects as well as inflation and a weak currency, the group said.

"In Norway there is high pressure in the (offshore drilling) rig market, but internationally the subsea market contributes to rising prices the most," Marius Andersen, chief economist at Offshore Norge, told Reuters.

In the years after 2024 investments will gradually decline, to 166.5 billion in 2028 as major projects are completed.

Significant oil and gas companies in Norway include Equinor (EQNR.OL), Aker BP (AKRBP.OL), Vaar (VAR.OL), Conocophillips (COP.N) and Shell (SHEL.L).

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS

The price tag of COP28’s renewable energy pledge

COP28 wrapped on Wednesday with officials touting a pledge to triple the world's renewable energy capacity by 2030. It even came twinned with a vow to double global energy-saving efforts over the same period.

Predictably, the promise came with some high-flying rhetoric.

COP28 President Sultan al-Jaber, the oil CEO helming the talks, claimed the goal “aligns more countries and companies around the North Star of keeping 1.5 degrees Celsius within reach than ever before,” referring to the Paris Agreement target for limiting global warming.

But are the flashy pledges as ambitious as they sound? POLITICO crunched the numbers and here's what they found: While the renewable energy target is well within reach, progress on energy efficiency has been a lot slower.

Countries would need to cut their energy intensity — the amount of energy used per unit of GDP — at least twice as fast between 2023 and 2030 as they did in previous years, which calls for major investments and substantial changes in individual behavior.

GE’s Recently Unveiled 18 MW Wind Turbine to Spin Offshore Japan

The three consortia that Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) selected in the country’s second round of offshore wind auctions will use some of the biggest and most powerful wind turbines on/coming to the market – Vestas V236-15 MW and GE’s 18 MW Haliade-X.

RWE, which secured a site together with partners Mitsui & Co. and Osaka Gas off the cities of Murakami and Tainai in Niigata Prefecture, plans to build a 684 MW offshore wind farm that will comprise 38 GE turbines with a capacity of 18 MW per unit.

GE revealed the next-generation Haliade-X turbine in an investors’ call in March this year, when Scott L. Strazik, CEO of GE Vernova, said the offshore wind market was receptive of its Haliade-X variant that has a capacity of between 17 MW and 18 MW. The company’s most powerful Haliade-X turbine at this time has an output of 14.7 MW.

NUCLEAR & POWER NEWS

Hinkley C nuclear reactor roof lifted into place

Engineers have lifted a steel roof onto a building which will house the first of two nuclear reactors at Hinkley Point in Somerset.

Hundreds of people helped with the delicate operation to get the 245-tonne steel dome into position.

It means the first reactor can be installed next year, ready to be switched on in June 2027.

Engineers at EDF said the "challenging job" was completed in just over an hour.

They first broke the ground on the new nuclear station in March 2017. Now, some 10,000 people work on what is Europe's largest building site.

They have faced delays from Covid restrictions and the budget has doubled to £33bn, so getting the roof on the first of the two reactor buildings is a big deal.

EDF 's nuclear island director Simon Parsons said: "Lifting the dome allows us to get on with the fitting of equipment, pipes and cables, including the first reactor which is on site and ready to be installed next year."

Nuclear minister Andrew Bowie hailed the "major milestone" in the building project.

He said: "This is a key part of the UK Government's plans to revitalise nuclear."

Octopus powers Italy with 1.5GW battery boost

Octopus Energy ‘s generation arm has unveiled a joint venture with Nexta Capital Partners, to advance Italy’s battery storage market.

The collaboration, based in Milan, will focus on the development of up to 1.5GW of commercial-scale battery storage systems.

The projects, concentrated primarily in the southern regions, hold the potential to store and release substantial electricity.

Upon completion, the projects are anticipated to store enough electricity to power up to a million homes daily.

This aligns with Italy’s broader objective of adding 9GW of new grid-scale energy storage and achieving a 65% share of green energy in the electricity mix by 2030.

Octopus Energy will explore the optimisation of the battery assets through its flexibility platform, Kraken, which currently manages 6GW of green energy assets.
