OIL AND GAS NEWS
South Korea to Explore for Potentially Huge Offshore Oil and Gas Reserves
South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol endorsed on Monday a plan for drilling off the east coast of one of the world’s largest oil and gas importers, to explore what studies say are potentially vast resources of crude oil and natural gas.
The area could contain 14 billion barrels of oil and gas, the president told a press conference on Monday, as carried by Reuters.
Yoon was citing a study about the resource potential off South Korea’s east coast. The study has been reviewed by industry groups and experts, the president said.
The area of the drilling will be offshore the southeastern industrial port city of Pohang, and the exploration prospects are in South Korea’s Exclusive Economic Zone, local officials said.
South Korea hopes to begin drilling around the end of this year and to find resources by the middle of next year. Commercial production is targeted for 2035 for the exploratory prospects, the larger part of which are estimated to contain natural gas.
South Korea imports nearly all the fossil fuels it consumes, so domestic production of oil and gas could go a long way to meet some of the demand.
The country is the fourth-largest importer of crude oil and natural gas in the world, Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) says. South Korea is also the world’s ninth-biggest energy consumer.

BMI Keeps $85 Oil Price Forecast Despite Downside Risks
The international crude benchmark Brent is expected to average $85 per barrel this year and $82 a barrel next year, BMI, a Fitch Solutions company, said in a report, keeping its outlook on oil prices despite the balance of risks lying “firmly to the downside.”
BMI noted that for its price forecast for 2024 to pan out, Brent needs to average $86 a barrel in the second half of the year, as it has averaged $83.50 year to date.
“We have opted not to revise our outlook at this point, but rather wait and see how price action plays out over the coming peak demand season in the northern hemisphere,” BMI said in a note carried by Bernama on Thursday.
Meanwhile, oil prices rebounded in Asian trade on Thursday, following days of selling, especially on Monday and Tuesday after OPEC’s announcement of production policy for the year ahead.
However, Brent Crude continued to trade below $80 per barrel, at around $78.80, and WTI Crude was below $75 early on Thursday, at $74.50 per barrel.

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
Azerbaijan and UAE launch joint renewable energy project as COP29 preparations underway
Azerbaijan and the United Arab Emirates announced the joint decision to build three major solar and wind projects in Azerbaijan with a capacity of 1 GW, with a ground-breaking ceremony on the sidelines of the Baku Energy Forum on Tuesday.
Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan told Euronews this event “actually demonstrates our green agenda and also demonstrates that our position is attractive not only for those who invest in fossil fuels, but also for those who invest in renewables. Masdar is our strategic partner in the area of renewable energy.”
The projects include a 445 MW solar plant in Bilasuvar, a 315 MW solar plant in Neftchala, and a 240 MW wind farm in Absheron-Garadagh. The plants are expected to produce an average annual output of a total of 2 billion 3025 million kWh of electricity, in turn saving 496 million cubic metres of natural gas per year and preventing more than 943 thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of Masdar and COP28 President said in his address, "We are proud to partner with Azerbaijan on this significant expansion of its renewable energy capacity and to support Azerbaijan’s journey toward energy diversification, stimulating new industries, new jobs and sustainable economic growth.”

Super impressive wall of wind turbines yield 2,200 kW of quiet energy
A wind fence developed by New York-based designer Joe Doucet is set to bring clean energy production into urban landscapes. The fence consists of vertical wind turbines, is modular, and, most importantly, is pleasing to the eye, making it more likely to be adopted in hotels, corporate buildings, and residential units.
In 2021, Doucet was researching distributed energy products for wind energy and found that few good options were available. So, the designer did what he could best: design a new product that was both efficient and scored on aesthetics.
After rigorous testing at two facilities in the US, the team was convinced that the helical structure of the turbine blades was the most efficient. This isn’t the first time someone is working with helically shaped blades in a vertical turbine. However, where Airiva claims to have made good progress is how to get maximum benefit by placing multiple blades operating simultaneously.
The company is still some distance away from installing its units commercially, though. Custom pilots could happen later this year, and the first orders will come in 2025.

NUCLEAR & POWER NEWS
SMRs alliance unveils their roadmap up to early 2025
The SMR Industrial Alliance used their General Assembly last week to define a work plan for the rest of 2024, establishing eight working groups to deliver on their objectives.
The SMR alliance, a collection of public and private actors with European Commission backing, wants to develop a European ecosystem for small nuclear modular reactors (SMRs) and advanced atomic modular reactors (AMRs).
These next-generation reactors have a power output of between 200 and 300 megawatts. They can be used for various applications, from generating electricity or heat for industrial or community applications to replacing coal-fired power plants.
The alliance hopes the first projects will operate in the first half of the 2030s – maybe earlier – allowing the technology to contribute towards reducing Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions.
These deployments would also contribute to the 50 gigawatts (GW) target of additional nuclear capacity by 2050, set by pro-nuclear EU Member States.

EV & BATTERY NEWS
Battery breakthrough could supercharge transition to renewable energy
Researchers say they have discovered a way to make a highly efficient form of battery cheap enough to be commercially viable on a massive scale, which they claim could transform renewable energy.
Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have high energy densities, making them popular in small devices like hearing aids, but they hold huge potential for much larger applications like grid-scale energy storage for renewable projects.
An international team from the University of Oxford, University College London and Hunan University in China were able to overcome this limitation by designing a new type of catalyst and battery component that reduces cost and is even flexible and stable enough to be used in wearable devices.
“Rechargeable metal–air batteries are promising power sources, especially zinc-air batteries, which offer high theoretical energy densities, environmental friendliness, and cost effectiveness,” said Huanxin Li , a research fellow in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford .
“Additionally, rechargeable ZABs are not only safe and stable but also portable and wearable.”
Importantly, the catalyst developed by the researchers uses a non-noble metal, making it far cheaper and easier to produce.
“Developing low-cost and efficient bifunctional non-noble electrocatalysts is crucial to the commercialization of rechargeable ZABs,” said Dr Li.
