Global Game Jam 17 - Orlando
Wow, just Wow!
I had the pleasure of visiting the two locations that hosted this years Global Game Jam here in Orlando. A huge thanks to The DAVE School and Full Sail University for hosting. A special shout out to the incredible folks at Indienomicon, Kunal, Jack, Dr. Peter, Chad, Dave and Angel as well as Robin and Robert for giving their well deserved time off to help plan and execute there awesome events.
I am excited to report that this year we had over 250 combined jammers working on close to 20 different games based on this years theme "Waves". Talent was abundant. Programmers, designers, artists and audio experts worked closely together to capture their interpretation of waves by using an assorted toolbox of technology. Organizers in Orlando decided to try and do something to help out communities not always represented in games by designing projects for those with disabilities including cerebral palsy, deafness and blindness. I saw examples of Unity, Unreal and other engines being used in concert with Amazon's Echo to provide voice activation in many of the projects.
To the many students and recent graduates that attended I salute you. There is nothing better you could be doing to secure your future by suiting up and showing up. The connections and friendships you made this weekend will reap dividends both personally and professionally. You now have more to add to your resume and recruiters and hiring managers will appreciate your efforts. These are the things that help to separate you from the pack and display passion. You will learn more about making games by making games than you will any other way.
To my my friend Robert Torres nephew who was attending his first game jam. There is no better way to learn about this industry. By attending the GGJ you were able to mix with professionals from all disciplines and learn about what it takes to program, design and create assets. The benevolence of this community and their willingness to give back and help others is second to none. I am really glad you were able to make it brother. I know you learned a lot. This is what it's all about.
If any recruiters and hiring managers are paying attention and looking for some solid new talent give me a shout. These are the folks you are looking for. I met students and graduates from UCF, Full Sail and the DAVE School that all displayed not only the talent you are looking for but the passion and willingness to take the extra steps needed to grow and learn.
