Student and Graduate Social Media Guidlines
It’s 2016. Social media is no longer a novelty. It is now the most powerful tool we have to stay connected to family, friends and industry. Many feel it is also a platform to express their concerns and opinions. So be it. However, students and recent graduates need to keep in mind the powerful effects that social media has on their reputation. (All people for that matter.) Recruiters and hiring managers are paying attention. What you say online can leave a lasting impression. How you say it even more so.
Many of you may find this redundant however during this crazy election cycle and chaotic time we live in a quick reminder can’t hurt. I welcome comments and suggestions.
- Be positive.
- Be joyful. Passion can be received with distain when not shared. Joy cannot be denied.
- Do share your happiness. We love seeing you enjoy life even though we are somewhat jealous of the awesome vacation you are taking.
- Be constructive. Opinions are OK, being opinionated is not.
- Stop complaining. We already know what the problem is, now, what’s your solution?
- Be helpful. Let others know that you care about them.
- Be interesting. Share your interests as they relate to your career.
- Know the difference between Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Snapchat etc.
- Be the person you would want to sit next to for 10 hours a day.
- Your choice in politics, entertainment and ideology will not be shared by everyone else. Be respectful and courteous.
- It is better to understand than to be understood.
- In that regard, before you send it, ask yourself if you would rather be happy or right.
- Do no post in anger.
- Actions speak louder than words.
- Desperation on your behalf will not motivate anyone to hire you.
- Nor will the fact that you are broke.
- Sure, you can promote your products and services but if that’s all you post it will grow stale quickly.
- Grammar and spelling!
- Asking questions is not a weakness but not knowing how to google is.
- Optimism always conquers pessimism.
What is the reputation you are trying to establish for yourself?
Lets try and be nice to one another out there!
