Sector Specialism:

This month we're looking at the latest insights in the cyber security sector. We sat down with Jack Reece to learn more about where the industry is headed and what cybersec professionals need to be aware of. Here are the highlights from what he had to say:

Trends in the European Cyber Industry 2024:

  • DORA - This particular piece of EU legislation comes into practice from January 2025 onwards, promising increased oversight on Cyber Security within the financial sector, due to its increasing reliance on digital (and therefore vulnerable) technologies.

The impact on hiring? We are already seeing demand for anyone with knowledge on the topic (I.e. from financial oversight bodies) both for focused in-house teams and more specialized InfoSec risk and management consultancies.

  • ICS/ OT Security - As per the last few years, the demand for security and governance professionals in the OT sector continues to grow. The extremely high profile cases over the last few years such as the Colonial Pipeline in the US, 1st recorded death from a cyber-attack on a hospital in Germany) coupled with increased State-sponsored attacks on critical infrastructure has led to this being an increased area of focus for both businesses and government.

The impact hiring? We see an increase across the full suite of requirements of cyber security within any industry. From engineers who look at the code on the devices, to architects who design the (production) networks, and pentester to makes sure all of this works. Hiring seems to be across the board, as we see a spike in consultancies, in-house roles, and product companies (Forescout, Dragos, etc)

  • AI - Consider this the obligatory mention of AI technologies. It definitely will cause some headaches for security professionals, especially from a privacy perspective. However, there are some interesting concepts out there, such as training automated Incident Response with data collected from previous attacks.

General trend of 2024 so far:

Hyper-specialisation of consultancy roles and generalization of in-house ones. As budgets restrict across European businesses and the wave of cost-cutting in the form of letting people go continues, unfortunately, cyber has not been immune from this. What we have seen is, especially in small-medium size businesses, security teams have gotten smaller. This naturally lumps more of the general workload on those remaining and outsources the more specialized work to consultancies.
