Industry Advocate

Industry Advocate

I spoke in parliament this week about the Industry Advocate Bill and while like every South Australian I want businesses in our state to have every opportunity to grow internally, across state borders and internationally this Bill has raised some questions.

While I will watch to make sure this Bill has the outcomes that are intended many key stakeholders have raised concerns with me that they don't want extra red tape or extra cost through this process.

I have also been asked Why? Why do we need a statutory body as the Industry Advocate to help SA businesses and SA Government departments to work together?

Then when I listened to the Minister for Small Business, Martin Hamilton Smith speak on the matter it all became clearer.

He mentioned the good work the Industry Advocate had done helping South Australian company KW Wholesale stationers to get into Government tenders for stationary. He sung the praises of the actions that have allowed them to tender and win contracts.

But the question is why did a South Australian business need help to tender for SA Government contracts. A quick google search shows that back in 2013 this same company was calling out the State Government. Their staff were talking pay cuts and so the business did what they could to survive and they were poised to shed 100's of jobs. Why? Because they had been locked out of the opportunity to tender for stationary contracts because of the policy the Weatherill Labor Government had put in place.

So this was a problem created by the SA Labor Government's poor policy which almost shut down KW Wholesale stationers. Now that same SA Labor Government offers a fix for the mess they have created and they want to be given credit!!

N.B. The State Budget is being released later today and I will have more to say on that in the coming days. Please feel free to share your thoughts here or via email. Wingard.mitchell@parliament.sa.gov.au

I see it differently, SME's need an advocate that will promote the use of local products and support domestic supply chain networks. Agree that the Weatherill government has often allowed poor purchasing practice to occur but some purchasing policy has changed as a result of small business owners having access through the Industry Advocate. If future government is accessible and has a buy Australian mentality then ok, but government must lead by example.
