The ongoing exodus of our young and talented South Australians

Yesterday I spoke in Parliament on the shocking numbers of South Australians who continue to leave our State. It's one of the main reasons I entered politics and an issue I am passionate about.

As a father of four young people, and knowing lots more in my community, I am very aware of how important it is that we create opportunities to keep young people in South Australia and to give them an opportunity to grow.

We need to create opportunities that will attract the great people we have lost back to South Australia and bring others to our great state. We have a great state—no-one is disputing that—but the way that it is being run under this current Weatherill Labor government is an absolute shame.

It is a big part of the reason that after 15 years of this government people are just leaving and not coming back to South Australia. It is a real shame, as I said, to see this happen, and South Australia is paying the price.

It's not just the 'young' people. Without relevant local opportunities, even us not-so-young with years of broad experience are leaving too. Never thought I'd leave SA, but packed up everything in February this year and haven't regretted a day. I had to look interstate to find the right role. Work till I'm 70? We all have to be fit enough and have a job that pays the bills to achieve that, Corey.

I am now one of only 2 SA people in our 26 year old SA founded national/international future industries tech business. Last month we had revenues of $7,500 in SA yet are sought after everywhere. I can talk about it for months.

I moved to SA in 2013 from Sydney. I absolutely loved the lifestyle and the people but moved back to Sydney after 18 months due to superior job offer. I would move back to SA in an instant (and stay!) if the career prospects were similar to Sydney (or Melbourne, though I haven't lived in Melbourne). SA is in a unique position at the moment to seize an opportunity. With housing affordability at record lows in Sydney there would be thousands of young families willing to move to SA if the career prospects were there. In my view you need to attract the big end of town with government incentives to relocate at least some of their personnel at sufficiently senior ranks so aspiring professionals don't feel dislocated / absent from view of the decision makers.

After growing up in Adelaide, I left for Sydney in late 2015 for work. As difficult as it was to leave everything in Adelaide after 25 years, the driving force was, and still remains, the lack of professional opportunities. The Construction and Manufacturing industries were the backbone of South Australia for many years - how things have changed...
