Bringing Mental Wellness into the Health and Safety Culture at JGC Fluor

On-site counseling sessions increased 250 percent; 9,000 workers engaged in wellbeing services

Employees on mega work sites, especially in remote locations, can face significant mental health challenges due to isolation, long hours and demanding work conditions. To address this, the JGC Fluor Corporation Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) team partnered with Workplace Options to ensure both physical and psychological safety on their worksite in BC, Canada. They launched the “MIND your Health” initiative to implement mental health support and offset the risk factors of working in demanding environments.

Before the partnership, remote employees at the LNG Canada project site in Kitimat, BC, had limited care for their emotional needs; there were less than 20 on-site counseling sessions per 14-day rotation. After two and a half years of the partnership, that number has more than tripled, with counselors serving 50 to 70 workers during that same timeframe.

The MIND your Health project proves that it is possible to change the culture on remote industrial sites when workers realize how employee wellbeing is connected to the broader framework of health and safety initiatives. The project shifted the dialogue amongst the Canadian workers —talking about mental health became not only normalized and encouraged, but embraced by employees at all levels—from frontline workers to leadership teams, cultivating a supportive environment for the industrial camp community.

Supporting Employees in their Caregiving Roles

Employees who are also caregivers face numerous workplace challenges, including stigma and lack of support, that impact their wellbeing. Comprehensive, tailored approaches are crucial for effective caregiver support, benefiting both employees and employers alike. The majority of working caregivers are parents, and over half of them report struggling to balance their job demands when their child’s health is at risk. By providing parents with support for managing their children’s mental health and behavioral needs, employers can demonstrate true empathy while delivering essential practical help.

Responding to the changing nature of family wellbeing across the globe, WPO is introducing a Child and Family Wellbeing program designed to empower parents and caregivers, equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to nurture and guide their children’s growth. Stay tuned for more information about this truly innovative program led by global thought leaders in child and family wellbeing.

Psychological Safety in Today’s Global Workforce

Leaders know psychological safety is critical for sustainable success, but often do not have information about how their employees are coping with challenges. Addressing the barriers to psychological safety, Workplace Options used data science and analytics to address workplace concerns in nine countries: Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Mexico, United Kingdom, and the United States. Rather than survey or ask opinions, WPO derived the data via human-to-human counseling between employees and our clinical team.

The findings comprise the “WPO Psychological Safety Study: Global Context for Organizational Success,” a free website and multimedia content hub that presents information on how psychological safety affects employees in different countries. The site includes multimedia resources, white papers, videos, articles, infographics, and other information on the global significance of psychological safety.
