LG "Wing" rotating display teased for September 14th launch

LG "Wing" rotating display teased for September 14th launch

LG is going official with its wacky new approach to smartphone design with a teaser for the LG "Wing". The smartphone's dual-display is rumored to have a rotating design to create a T-shape. LG's new teaser hints heavily at this new smartphone silhouette, suggesting a new immersive way to experience content.

In the associated press release, LG has stated that the upcoming announcement will mark the jumpoff of its new Explorer Project, which will represent a new lineup of smartphones. The initiative was created "in response to the diverse usage needs of today’s smartphone customers and to deliver much-needed curiosity and excitement to the mobile sector." In other words, LG is going full steam with its weirdness and is unapologetic about it. Meanwhile, traditional smartphones like the recently released Velvet will fall under the company's Universal Line.

LG has struggled for many years to make a meaningful impact on the smartphone industry. After years of straight losses, the company announced that it planned to change course and aim for profitability by 2021. How? By offering unique smartphones with a "wow" factor. If the upcoming "Wing" or other rumored devices are anything to go by, LG will definitely be raising some eyebrows during a time when smartphone differentiation has largely plateaued.

Meanwhile, leaks of the LG "Wing" have shown the device being used in a few interesting ways, taking advantage of the nature of the two screens. LG is likely doubling down on its dual-screen approach as the ideal way to multitask while also enhancing the gaming experience. Rumors suggest the "Wing" will feature a large 6.8-inch display with a smaller square display, powered by a Snapdragon 765G. While many would expect such a device to aim for the newer 865 Plus chipset, LG is likely aiming to balance out price and power, which has been a recurring strategy for them as of late.

Full details are expected to be announced on September 14th at 7 am PST via LG's official YouTube channel.
