October 2023
Dear Friends,
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month , a time for everyone to embrace the significance of breast health. In partnership with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene , FPHNYC is working to enhance Breast Cancer Navigation services through a new breast cancer coalition of hospitals and healthcare systems. Breast Cancer is one of several focus areas of the NYC Women's Health Agenda to make New York City the most women-forward city by closing gaps in gender equity and ensuring access to quality economic opportunities, education, health and social services, and safety.
Please consider supporting the Health Department's innovative Breast Cancer Navigation initiative. This initiative is modeled after the very successful Colonoscopy Patient Navigator program , which has helped prevent potential cancers in nearly 20,000 people! I can't think of a better way to honor our mothers, sisters, wives, and friends.
Warm regards – happy and safe trick-or-treating!

This Month's Focus
Vaccine Outreach to Counter Respiratory Viruses Ramps Up
Respiratory viruses such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV are more common in fall and winter. Staying up to date with your flu and COVID-19 vaccines protects you and significantly fosters a healthier and safer environment for all of us. Plus, for the first time, there are new vaccines and medicines to help prevent RSV in people ages 60 and older, as well as infants and young children. These are simple yet powerful ways to make a positive difference in our community. You can find a vaccination site near you.
Thank you to the National Council of Aging (NCOA) for a generous grant to FPHNYC on behalf of the NYC Health Department to advance vaccine awareness and access this fall and winter. NCOA's support is increasing equitable COVID-19 and flu vaccine distribution and helping to counter vaccine misinformation in partnership with community-based organizations.
