Launch of Mental Health Plan and Healthy NYC
In early March, Mayor Eric Adams joined Health Commissioner and FPHNYC Board Chair Dr. Ashwin Vasan to present a comprehensive mental health agenda for New York City. FPHNYC, in its long-standing role connecting the Health Department to the philanthropic community, organized a briefing for foundations to learn more about this transformative mental health plan and partnership opportunities. Read more on the FPHNYC Blog.
In the fall, the Mayor and Dr. Vasan launched HealthyNYC , an ambitious campaign to increase New Yorkers’ life expectancy to exceed 83 years by 2030. FPHNYC is working closely with the Health Department on programs to address the greatest drivers of premature death, including chronic and diet-related diseases, screenable cancers, overdose, suicide, maternal mortality, violence, and COVID-19.
Roundtable on Birth Equity
Black women and birthing people in NYC die in pregnancy and up to 12 months postpartum at a higher rate than white peers. The City of New York is committed to reducing birth inequities by expanding multifaceted initiatives and partnerships to ensure Black pregnant persons have the support they need to thrive.
As part of these efforts, the Clinton Global Initiative partnered with the Health Department and FPHNYC for a roundtable on Black maternal health hosted by Dr. Chelsea Clinton. Read more about the roundtable on the FPHNYC Blog

In June 2023, the Health Department unveiled the city’s first public health vending machine, hosted by Services for the Underserved (S:US) in East Brooklyn. The machine offers free health and wellness supplies, such as naloxone, hygiene kits, and safer sex kits. FPHNYC provides project assistance to the Health Department, S:US, and other community partners hosting additional machines.

Sexual Health Education and Youth Development
FPHNYC secured $10 million in federal funding for the New York City Teens Connection (NYCTC) program. NYCTC works with hundreds of schools, high-quality, teen-friendly clinics, and dozens of youth-serving organizations to implement evidence-based sexual health education annually for at least 15,000 youth. Mars Estudillo, a 21-year-old NYCTC youth leader alum and current Senior Youth Coordinator, shares some insights on the FPHNYC blog about her involvement with the program.
Expansion of Early Childhood Program
A successful Early Intervention (EI) initiative that serves NYC children with developmental delays and disabilities is receiving an additional $2.46 million in support from three philanthropic foundations. FPHNYC was awarded a two-year renewal grant from Robin Hood, New York City’s largest poverty-fighting philanthropy, to expand electronic referrals to NYC’s EI program. FPHNYC also worked with the Viking Global Foundation and Tiger Foundation to support this expansion of electronic referral and retention efforts so that more underserved communities in NYC benefit from EI services. New Funding for Student Mental Health Services
Recognizing how critical it is to support the mental health and well-being of young New Yorkers, FPHNYC is proud to have secured a total of $1.35 million in funding from Robin Hood and the Carmel Hill Fund to expand access to mental health services for students in NYC public schools. The initiative will employ a blended telehealth model so that students in NYC public schools (including smaller schools that historically have had fewer health resources) can access services that best fit their personalized needs. The telemental health initiative is just one of the mental health support programs FPHNYC is helping bring to New Yorkers as we strive to realize the goals of the City's 2023 Mental Health Plan and those of Healthy NYC .
Congrats to Team FPHNYC at the 2023 NYC Marathon!
