Overcoming Fitness Plateaus: How to Keep Making Progress in Your Online Program

By Coach Lee Lipscomb

Hey there, healthy peeps!

It's Coach Lee here, and today we're diving into a topic that almost every fitness journey encounters at some point: the dreaded plateau.

It's that frustrating phase when, despite your best efforts, progress seems to screech to a halt. But fear not,

because plateaus are just a part of the process, and I've got some strategies to help you push through and keep making gains in your online program. Let’s break it down!

1. First Things First: Recognize the Plateau

You can't fix a problem if you don't know it exists. If you've been stuck at the same weight, or can't seem to increase your reps or resistance for a few weeks, you're likely in a plateau. And that's okay! Remember, every athlete, from beginner to pro, faces plateaus.

2. Mix Up Your Routine

Your body is an adaptable machine. Doing the same workouts day in and day out will eventually cause your muscles to adapt, leading to a plateau. The solution? Mix things up! Try different exercises, adjust the number of sets and reps, or incorporate interval training. Variety is the spice of life and the fuel of progress.

3. Set New Goals

Remember when you first started and set your initial goals? Maybe it was to lose 10 pounds or complete a 5k run. As you progress, it's essential to reassess and set new challenges. This not only reignites your motivation but also directs your training in a new direction.

4. Don’t Skip Recovery

Rest and recovery are crucial. Overtraining can lead to plateaus, injuries, and burnout. Your muscles grow and repair during rest, not while you're working out. So, make sure you're giving yourself adequate recovery time and considering active recovery methods like stretching or yoga.

5. Recheck Your Nutrition

Fueling your body correctly is just as essential as your workouts. If you've hit a plateau, it might be time to revisit your diet. Maybe you need more protein, or perhaps you're consuming more calories than you think. A balanced diet will provide the energy and nutrients needed to push through plateaus.

6. Stay Accountable with Your Online Program

The beauty of online fitness programs is the flexibility, but it's also easy to slack off without a physical trainer present. Ensure you're fully engaged, regularly check in, and even consider getting a virtual workout buddy. Remember, consistency is key!

7. Celebrate Small Wins

While you might be gunning for a significant change, don't forget to celebrate the little milestones along the way. These small achievements will keep you motivated and remind you of how far you've come.

8. Seek Expert Advice

If you've tried everything and still feel stuck, it might be time to consult an expert. I'm always here to help! Sometimes, having a fresh set of eyes on your routine can pinpoint areas of improvement you might have missed.

To wrap things up, hitting a fitness plateau is entirely normal, and overcoming it is all part of the journey. So, stay committed, keep experimenting, and remember why you started this journey in the first place. Let's keep pushing, and remember, every day is a chance to be better than the last!

Everything you wrote about overcoming Plateauing is true. Thus, everything you wrote to do about Plateauing can be anticipated in advance and already included in the planning, so as to mitigate it. This is what proper Periodization Workload Management does. It anticipates Plateaus and so avoids Plateaus with preplanning.
