New Report on Career Development from INTOO

INTOO USA recently published a report, 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, which uncovered key findings on how career advancement, or lack thereof, is impacting today’s workforce. The key takeaway from the survey of 1,600 employers and employees in the U.S. is that employees feel unsupported in their career development.

Nearly 60% of workers say their company “rarely” or “never” helps them explore opportunities for growth outside of their department. Meanwhile, 44% of Gen Z employees are likely to quit in the next 6 months because their employer does not support their career development.

Many managers are not helping: While employees would like to count on them for career advice, almost half say their manager doesn’t know how to help, and 47% of Gen Z workers say they get better guidance from ChatGPT.

These and other findings within the report reveal a need for greater support for both managers and employees and better L&D programming.

Leadership Insights: What's New in our World of Work

Fighting the uphill reskilling battle

Most of Europe is struggling with a skills deficit or difficulties in matching skilled talent to the right roles due to problematic issues like geographic distance or issues with acquiring work visas. Recently, the national governments in France and Spain were reprimanded by the European Commission who felt not enough active efforts were being made to boost the skills of applicants having trouble finding roles and supporting their reintegration into the labour market.

French employment offices reported last year that 61% of available roles were difficult to fill, while in Spain recruiters reported that 79% of the candidates they vet for new jobs have poor quality profiles.

Efforts need to be made to bring all stakeholders to the table to map ways forward and implement action plans for reskilling and upskilling workers as well as easing entry of skilled talent from other EU member states and third countries into specific European labour markets.

Is it better to lead with a carrot or a stick?

Everyone is being impacted, or will be impacted, by skills changes, including our managers and leaders. For decades, we taught and trained our business managers and executives to be IRON leaders: to engage teams through leading by example and showing high levels of resilience.

However, in the past half-decade the parameters for impactful, effective leadership have changed. With the current generational transition, many of our work teams respond to and deliver better results when empathy and greater compassion become part of leadership styles.

That said, the volatility and unpredictability of the global economy and our labour markets in recent years have added another interesting potential superpower to the skilled leader mix: irony. Today, impactful leaders can encourage and achieve the delivery of better work results when they demonstrate they understand seeming impossibilities current market conditions have created.

Geopolitical conditions and green transformation redefine job markets in Central Europe

Constant shifts in terms of geopolitical stability and industry sector transformation are rapidly changing job markets. Central Europe is no exception. As with other parts of the world, energy costs are a big concern for businesses in the region as well as for many of their partner and parent companies in Western Europe.

Recent news reports and research show that many larger businesses from EU member states like Germany are deeply examining what energy costs are doing to their bottom line and exploring options for shifting some operations to lower cost markets further east.

This offers new opportunities for markets in the CEE region where industries like production of electronics and parts supply for electric vehicles (EVs) and other green technologies has grown. Countries like Slovakia and Hungary stand out for their investments into producing energy through renewable sources and bringing operational costs down. Green technologies are expected to remain an important growth market in the CEE region in coming years and candidates need to skill up for these roles.

I want to be a change superstar!

Our team at Gi Group Holding Netherlands spent much of last year addressing the topic of change: in their conversations with clients and with candidates. Both sides of the recruitment equation are looking at how to scout for and onboard talent with an affinity for change management and the soft skills needed to make teams change-brave and, over time, change-resilient.

Executives and Managers in businesses across all industry sectors today are increasingly called upon to guide their teams through many sets of challenges that they alone cannot influence or alter 100%. Issues like stubborn inflation, supply chain bottlenecks or digital transformation and generational shifts in employee teams all have an impact and require high levels of agile thinking.

The we’ve always done things this way mentality is a thing of the past, given that in our modern economy, the rules that applied yesterday may already be obsolete or passé tomorrow. This is why businesses need to recruit change superstars to their teams.
