+1 Global Fund
Philanthropic Fundraising Services
A collaborative platform for discovering, strengthening, connecting, and amplifying locally-led change.
About us
The +1 Global Fund is a collaborative platform for discovering, strengthening, connecting, and amplifying locally-led change in the Global South. The Fund leverages a networks-of-network model, in partnership with globally recognized organizations, to source high-impact changemakers working with vulnerable and last-mile communities. Through a nomination-based framework, we identify, invest in, and develop the capacity of historically overlooked and under-funded social innovators. Launched by The Roddenberry Foundation, the Fund brings together philanthropists, foundations, and partners who collectively believe that the engine for change lies in the efforts of locally-led, earlier-stage, and high-potential organizations. The +1 Global Fund is organized by sector– WASH, education, food security, health– each supported by multiple funders who pool funds and form a community of practice that seeks to shift power to those closest to the problems and best positioned and most qualified to lead change.

Last week’s African Philanthropy Conference brought together incredible minds. We’re thrilled to continue working alongside some of these changemakers to create lasting impact across the African continent. #africanphilanthropy #collaboration

Last week, I attended the African Philanthropy Conference in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Known as "Mosi-oa-Tunya" or "the smoke that thunders," this place truly lived up to its name as one of the wonders of the world. I was particularly inspired by the panel discussions, which focused on how philanthropists can collaborate to drive impactful and lasting change in Africa. We explored the role of technology, especially AI, in philanthropy and discussed the importance of including youth and religious groups at all levels. The power of the +1 Network, created by the +1 Global Fund, was an excellent example of how much can be achieved when we collaborate. Awardee organizations from the +1 Network—the Institute of Water and Sanitation Development, Combined Harare Residents Association, the Matabeleland Institute for Human Rights, and The Community Water Alliance— used this opportunity to lead a parallel session on ‘Africa Climate Models within the Context of the WASH Crisis,’ showcasing the strength of collaborative efforts. Additionally, +1 led a session on ‘A Missed Opportunity for Outsized Impact: Systems-Oriented Small Organizations,’ arguing for increased funding for smaller, early-stage organizations to achieve greater results. Our Offers and Needs Marketplaces, which we live-demoed during this session, proved to be a dynamic way to connect funders and participants, driving home the need for more collaboration and networking opportunities. Overall, the conference was an enriching experience, and I highly recommend attending future events. Your participation will enhance your understanding and contribute to the collective progress we strive for in African philanthropy. 🌍✨ The Africa Philanthropy Network (Formerly The African Grantmakers Network) Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment - CAPSI TrustAfrica

Fifteen Kenyan farmers, supported by +1 Food Security Awardee Seed Savers Network Kenya, are challenging a restrictive seed law that threatens their livelihoods and food security. The legislation, designed to benefit seed corporations, infringes on farmers' constitutional rights by criminalizing the sharing and selling of their seeds. A pivotal court hearing is scheduled with the potential to set a groundbreaking precedent for farmers' rights across Africa. This legal battle exemplifies the growing resistance against laws undermining farmers' sovereignty and control over their seeds, paving the way for a more food-secure future. Bravo, Seed Savers Network! #farmersrights #foodsecurity

A new study by WaterAid and the World Bank reveals a startling statistic: healthcare facility infections cost Sub-Saharan Africa a staggering $8.4 billion annually, claiming countless lives that could be saved. The good news? At least half of these infections are preventable with improved water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in these facilities. This highlights the profound impact WASH has on healthcare, a powerful example of how interconnected global challenges can be. At +1 Global Fund, we're proud to partner with over 65 local organizations across Sub-Saharan Africa to address WASH needs. By improving access to clean water and sanitation, we can significantly reduce infections and strengthen healthcare systems in the region. A staggering 210,000 adolescent girls and young women (aged 15-24) in sub-Saharan Africa contracted HIV in 2022 alone, according to the UN. This critical issue demands ongoing action. That's why we're proud to partner with the Kaana Foundation For Outreach Programs. This non-profit empowers young people, women, and children affected by HIV and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) challenges. Their work directly contributes to achieving Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), while supporting the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets for HIV treatment.
