Last week, we had an engaging AEGEUS project meeting in Bremen at Fraunhofer MEVIS. This time, we met in Bremen to discuss the next steps towards our combined ultrasound-EEG-device for deep brain stimulation and measurements. We put a focus on transducer positioning and clinical study design and gained valuable insights from the discussion with our Scientific Advisory Board. We extend our gratitude to our host and all participants for their constructive participation: Laura Astolfi, Matthias Guenther, Ren Xu, Yvonne Höller #aegeusmeeting, #projectmeeting, #bremen, #aegeus, #ultrasound, #eeg
About us
AEGEUS - A Novel EEG Ultrasound Device for Functional Brain Imaging and Neurostimulation - is an EU funded project involving 7 partners from 4 countries all over Europe. The final goal of AEGEUS is to develop a highly innovative new brain analysis and therapy setup based on the combination of electroencephalography (EEG), a newly developed functional ultrasound (US) imaging method and ultrasound-based neuro-stimulation. EEG is an established neurological method to analyze the electrical activity of the brain. It enables the acquisition of data with high temporal resolution especially of structures close to the skull. This will be supplemented by an US component, which should also detect functional information from deep brain regions. In addition, ultrasound, especially in a focused manner, has also the potential to stimulate and to suppress neural activity. This should enable a localized, non-invasive therapy of the brain to be carried out and controlled with the same device. As part of the AEGEUS project, the newly developed device will first be clinically tested on healthy volunteers before being tested on epilepsy patients. We are convinced that the device developed in AEGEUS will open up new avenues for diagnosis, treatment and research of neurological diseases.

We were delighted that our AEGEUS project was part of this year’s European Researchers’ Night in Frascati, organized by Associazione Frascati Scienza. We hope our poster successfully sparked the interest and curiosity of the attendees. The European Researchers’ Night is the largest science outreach event in Europe. In 2024 and 2025, 58 projects will host events in 25 countries. Universities and research institutes across Europe will open their doors to showcase their work through presentations, experiments, games, discussions, and other interactive formats. A fantastic opportunity to bring science to the forefront and inspire young people to engage with it. It’s a contribution towards a better future. #EuropeanResearchersNight, #Aegeus, #neurotech, #innovation

News from the ISTU Congress in Taipei: Last week, our colleague Sven Rothlübbers from Fraunhofer MEVIS attended the Annual Symposium on Therapeutic Ultrasound. He presented his results on “Fourier-based Signal Projection for Global Speed of Sound Autofocusing in Plane-Wave Imaging”. It was an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss the latest advancements in the field. Information about the global speed of sound is essential for planning and monitoring ultrasound therapy, and it will further advance the AEGEUS project. We proudly announce that our project colleague Sven Rothlübbers from Fraunhofer MEVIS will present his results on “Fourier-based Signal Projection for Global Speed of Sound Autofocusing in Plane-Wave Imaging” at the ISTU Congress in Taipei on Sunday, September 22 at 09:34 AM in Session “Treatment Monitoring”. Information about the global speed of sound is a crucial basis for ultrasound therapy planning and monitoring. His work’s objective is to estimate it efficiently which will bring the AEGEUS project one step ahead. Sven@ISTU https://lnkd.in/eQkzkUnQ General ISTU page https://lnkd.in/er6hjqzc

Watch this video the get an impression of another great other project of our project partner g.tec!
Screen Dress by Anouk Wipprecht 😍😍, featuring the g.tec medical engineering GmbH Unicorn Headband to control the six eyes on the screens 😍😍😍. The Unicorn Headband calculates the model's cognitive performance in real-time and sends the data to the six displays to animate the eyes. The eyes close more when the user's brain shows higher cognitive engagement and open otherwise. It's quite a sight to have eight eyes observing you. During the development of the Screen Dress, we deliberated on what to display on the screens. Coincidentally, my sister's family had just taken an iris photograph that looked stunning 😋😋, so we decided to showcase it on the screens. Subsequently, we had to devise realistic iris and eye movements for the six screens. The processing for the six screens is managed by Raspberry Pis, which are in WiFi contact with the Unicorn Suite. 👉To learn more about the project, visit: https://lnkd.in/dXjKGnya 👉To learn more about the BCI system, visit: https://lnkd.in/dvX-eT6T 👉To request a quote or check prices, visit: https://lnkd.in/dw2Er2qZ #BCI #EEG #screendress #neurotechnology #gtecmedical

We proudly announce that we have successfully participated in Module A of the Horizon Results Booster with our project group CITRUS. The three EIC Pathfinder Projects CITRUS EU-Project, CROSSBRAIN and AEGEUS Project have identified their potential collective results to be disseminated, their characteristics and the target stakeholders. All three projects are investigating completely new technologies for brain stimulation and measurement of neural activity with the ultimate goal of treating neurological diseases, e.g., psychiatric disorders or epilepsy. Looking forward to more fruitful collaboration in the upcoming Module B.
