Today at the University at Albany we unveiled our new AI Supercomputer – one of the most advanced AI supercomputers at any university in the country. This supercomputer will allow our researchers to conduct groundbreaking research that aims to benefit the public good, including using AI to improve our understanding of extreme weather, making forecasts more accurate, and helping emergency managers make critical decisions; find treatments for devastating diseases infinitely faster; and leveraging machine learning to identify ways to remove “forever chemicals” from farm soils. Two years ago, we launched our innovative AI Plus initiative (and established the AI Plus Institute at UAlbany) to integrate teaching and learning about AI across all our academic and research programs. To support this initiative, we embarked on the largest cluster hire in university history, bringing on 27 new faculty members with AI expertise across disciplines in each of our schools and colleges. None of this would be possible without the leadership of our Vice President for Research and Economic Development, Kesh Kesavadas; the technical expertise of our talented IT team, led by Brian Heaton; our Provost, Carol Kim; our CFO, Todd Foreman; our Vice President for Government and Community Relations, Sheila Seery, and the amazing faculty that do extraordinary work at UAlbany, among others. Our leadership in AI has been generously supported by New York State with a $75 million infusion of funding. Governor Hochul’s clear-eyed vision for AI that benefits everyone in New York has positioned our state to lead, nationally and globally. Also, thanks to The State University of New York Chancellor John King and Assemblymembers Patricia Fahy and John T. McDonald III, RPh for their ongoing support. Had the honor last week of giving the opening keynote at the Lake Champlain - Lake George Regional Planning Board 3rd Annual Forward Together conference in Lake Placid. The half day conference included presentations from state and federal partners about grant funding, infrastructure development, and emerging partnerships. A great event by a wonderful organization.
