California's wine industry is facing a grape surplus challenge. Adaptation is key. https://lnkd.in/e5u5JuAG California's wine industry is at a critical crossroads as it grapples with a significant grape surplus. While white wine sales are increasing, red wine consumption is declining, leaving many growers with excess fruit and difficult decisions ahead. The numbers are sobering: experts recommend removing 50,000 acres of vines to rebalance supply, and the 2024 grape crush was the smallest since 2004. Meanwhile, prices have plummeted, with premium Napa grapes going unsold and Chardonnay selling for as little as $500 per ton. Beyond traditional solutions like vine removal (now facing higher costs due to new burning regulations) and a saturated bulk wine market, innovative approaches are emerging: 🍇 Upcycling grapes into premium skincare products and spa treatments 🍇 Creating sustainable grape leather alternatives 🍇 Developing upcycled culinary ingredients like grape pomace flour 🍇 Producing natural food additives and preservatives For wineries and growers, diversification and adaptability will be key to weathering this transition. "In a shockingly quick turn of events..." Shocking and jubilant. It took a minute (or years and a lot of lobbying), but Mississippi finally approved DtC wine shipping. I believe the term I'm looking for is HALLELUJAH! 🤲 🍷 Now, it comes with a caveat. Licensed wineries can only ship to homes in wet counties, and there are still 31 dry counties in the state (with some city-approved provisions). How it breaks down for me personally...my vacation home is in a wet county. Come July 1, 2025, I will be able to ship wine to my address. My immediate family lives in a dry county without local city approvals, so they can't ship to their homes. (Whomp, whomp.) It's still pretty complicated, but it's progress. Actually, I would call this monumental. Much like the medical-approved marijuana law that passed in 2022, this is a giant leap toward the political middle for a traditionally very (VERY) conservative state.
