  • 🌟 In this week's #MeetTheTeam, we're excited to feature Sharon Host, one of our dedicated Global Professional Instructors! 🌟 We asked Sharon, "How does our training make an impact on those living with dementia?" Here's her response: "If you’ve ever experienced a time when you were ignored or talked down to and then had the opposite experience where you were acknowledged and valued as an equal, it can give you an inkling of how our training changes the lives of people with dementia. You (the person with dementia) go from being a task on someone’s to do list to being seen as a person of value that can still contribute to all aspects of life. Can you imagine the change in perspective and well-being this brings to the person living with dementia and their care partners? It is life changing. Caregivers simply don’t know what they don’t know. Our training gives them the knowledge and skills to understand the right care and behavior approaches so they can provide care with confidence and competence. Caregivers begin to enjoy their jobs because they now know how to see the person behind the disease and how to keep that person in well-being instead of living in distress. The person with dementia begins to engage more in their life and have feelings of satisfaction, comfort, and security. The norm in our society is to think people with dementia are suffering. Investing in Dementia Capable Care means people with dementia can thrive, experience quality of life, and live free of distress behaviors. Come join us in our mission of creating a dementia capable society." Thank you, Sharon, for your commitment to improving dementia care. • 🌟 This week's #MeetTheTeam spotlight shines on Sharon Jackson, one of our Global Professional Instructors. 🌟 We asked Sharon, "How does our training make an impact on professional development?" Here’s what she had to say: "As a Trainer of Dementia Capable Care for over 10 years, I have met individuals from many different health care professions; Nursing, Social Services, Therapy Professionals, and Activities professionals to name a few. These individuals range from new to the field to quite experienced. No matter what level of experience, the general response after taking our course is that they have learned something in a way they have not heard before. The general discussion is that Dementia Capable Care is a training which provides a language, philosophy, framework, and practical base of knowledge that can empower staff to provide the person-centered ability-based care they have always wanted to provide. They feel this knowledge is truly for everyone, at all levels of healthcare. As part of my role, I am privileged to work with healthcare partners in their communities as well. It fills my heart, when I am able to see the impact this training can have first-hand. I see healthcare professionals and the direct care partner’s joy and confidence build as they use the approaches and have success. When teams across all professions are all speaking the same language, working from the same core principles, and see individuals living with dementia as people first, the positive outcomes follow. This impact then affects the lives of those living with dementia, their loved ones as well as us - the health care professionals who partner and support in care. Our vision is to create a dementia capable society, will you join us?" 🌐 Ready to take your dementia care skills to the next level? • 🌟 #MeetTheTeam Spotlight: Kim Warchol 🌟 This week, we are thrilled to feature our incredible Founder and President, Kim Warchol. We asked Kim, "What does it mean to invest in quality dementia training, and why does it matter?" Here's what she had to say: "Quality is the key. For the time and money invested, there should be an expectation that quality training improves the learner’s abilities to perform their job in a more meaningful and successful way. The investment from specialized care delivered by a confident and competent workforce should be realized several times over in terms of the positive outcomes obtained like saving time during care and getting better business and care results. Quality dementia training focuses on person-centered care, dementia stages/disease progression, and behavior management. It builds essential knowledge and implementation skills around these topics. Examples: 🔷 Learning to prevent/de-escalate distress behaviors, staff will experience less injury, frustration, and fear on the job. This saves money by improving staff turnover rates and mitigating risks such as reducing injury on the job. 🔷 Learning to adapt communication for every dementia stage, staff will minimize communication breakdowns. Improved understanding between caregiver and client optimizes level of function, participation, and well-being – all reducing care time. 🔷 Learning to adapt activities and environment for every dementia stage, staff unleashes the person’s potential and optimizes their safety. As a result, a reduction in falls & distress behaviors (without psychotropic drugs), and improving function are probable. 🔷 Learning to use key information about the person in care, staff are prepared to create a quality experience and build trust and rapport. This prevents costly resistance to care and creates a pleasant experience for all." Thank you Kim for your dedication to transforming dementia care and empowering caregivers.
