About us

The Department of Chemistry “Giacomo Ciamician” was founded the January of 1987 from the homonymous famous pioneer in photochemistry. It now includes a big research community (around 100 staff members) covering a wide range of chemistry topics, such as: photochemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, electrochemistry, polymeric and inorganic materials, computational chemistry, physical chemistry, structural biology, chemistry for restoration, and cosmetic and pharmaceutical chemistry. The department research is actively involved in project with industries, counting many collaborations with industrial partners, patents and spinoff companies. Many of these collaborations are now focused on driving the green transition of extremely diverse technologies. Divulgation and knowledge diffusion is also one of the pillars of the department, being active and prone for collaboration with schools or museums. The department is mostly located in Bologna with two additional campuses in Rimini, mostly focused on cosmetic chemistry, and Ravenna, focused on environmental chemistry.
